This biological process is an important mechanism that prevents the proliferation of potential cancer cells and could play a role in promoting tissue repair and fuel inflammation,\u00a0<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/jcb.rupress.org\/content\/192\/4\/547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">according to the\u00a0<em>Journal of Cell Biology.<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The company published a study in\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>\u00a0explaining that selectively eliminating senescent cells could treat atherosclerosis, which is a\u00a0<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/health-topics\/topics\/atherosclerosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">condition<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that entails a build-up of fats and cholesterols in the walls of heart arteries impeding blood flow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unity constructed animal models simulating the early and late stages of the disease to test this theory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Results indicated clearing out these cells hindered the growth of atherosclerotic plaques, diminished inflammation and changed the structure of plaques so that it is lower risk and more stable,\u00a0<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fiercebiotech.com\/biotech\/amazon-s-bezos-mayo-clinic-back-unity-116m-to-slow-diseases-aging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">reported\u00a0<em>FierceBiotech.<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;This newly published work adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the role of cellular senescence in aging and demonstrates that the selective elimination of senescent cells is a promising therapeutic paradigm to treat diseases of aging and extend healthspan,&#8221; said Jamie Dananberg, M.D., who works as UNITY&#8217;s chief medical officer\u00a0<a style=\"color: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/unity-biotechnology-announces-116-million-series-b-financing-300352831.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in a statement.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The new financing will be used to advance the firm\u2019s cellular senescence research programs and commence clinical research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe believe that we have line of sight to slow, halt, or even reverse numerous diseases of aging, and we look forward to starting clinical trials with our first drug candidates in the near future,\u201d added Dananberg.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unity\u2019s early work is focusing on cellular senescence to help treat aging-related diseases.
