Belgian company Lambda-X came up with a space-inspired device to do just that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A long-term partner of ESA, they converted an instrument they had developed for space use into a quality-control tool that has significantly improved the products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11010\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11010\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Lens_inspection_instrument_NIMO_from_Belgian_Lambda-X_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"170\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Lens_inspection_instrument_NIMO_from_Belgian_Lambda-X_small.jpg 170w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Lens_inspection_instrument_NIMO_from_Belgian_Lambda-X_small-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lens inspection instrument<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sitting at the end of the production line, it precisely checks the whole lens \u2013 including the inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It can even inspect lenses that surgeons implant to improve the vision of patients with cataracts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cOne of the biggest challenges when making any kind of lens is getting the shape right every time,\u201d says Marc Halbach from Lambda-X customer PhysIOL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMisshapen or defective lenses can cause discomfort and distort vision. Unlike contact lenses, you cannot throw away a lens that is inside your eye if it\u2019s not right. It\u2019s vital for us to ensure each lens meets our stringent quality threshold.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>From weightlessness to clear vision<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"s_2\" class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lambda-X has developed and built more than 30 optical and measuring instruments that are either already in space or set to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11011\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11011\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11011\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/The_International_Space_Station_with_ATV-2_and_Endeavour_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"170\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/The_International_Space_Station_with_ATV-2_and_Endeavour_small.jpg 170w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/The_International_Space_Station_with_ATV-2_and_Endeavour_small-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">International Space Station<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A compact unit on ESA\u2019s Trace Gas Orbiter will soon be analysing the martian atmosphere, and there are various instruments in the laboratories on the International Space Station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One Station instrument is monitoring the behaviour of liquids and gases in weightlessness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cOut of curiosity, I put my glasses into the unit,\u201d recalls the company\u2019s CEO, Olivier Dupont. \u201cWe realised quite by accident that we could also measure optical lenses and surfaces very precisely.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They came up with a machine that inspects ophthalmic lenses with far greater accuracy than its competitors, and it has been so successful that the company has become a world leader in the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"s_3\" class=\"section\">\n<h3 class=\"subh\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mapping the lens<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"img_obj r_img\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The technique maps not only the surface of the lens but also its interior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNext time you watch sunlight travelling through the hot air above a candle or a toaster onto a bright wall, notice how grey streaks whirl around like smoke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By observing the shadow, we can measure the optical properties of the hot air \u2013 or lens, in our case.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11012\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11012\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11012\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Lens_analysis_instrument_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"96\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Lens_analysis_instrument_small.jpg 170w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Lens_analysis_instrument_small-70x40.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lens analysis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is a benefit in time and manpower because operators no longer need to calibrate the devices as they do with older methods, and the software is easy to use with plenty of options and full traceability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For Lambda-X, working with manufacturers like PhysIOL has allowed both sides to improve their service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve learned a lot from Lambda-X and they have gained from us.
