{"id":12017,"date":"2017-04-11T11:29:17","date_gmt":"2017-04-11T11:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/?p=12017"},"modified":"2017-04-11T11:29:17","modified_gmt":"2017-04-11T11:29:17","slug":"internet-atlas-maps-physical-internet-enhance-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/internet-atlas-maps-physical-internet-enhance-security\/","title":{"rendered":"Internet Atlas maps the physical internet to enhance security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12018\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Internet-Atlas-map-768x422.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"338\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Internet-Atlas-map-768x422.jpg 614w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Internet-Atlas-map-768x422-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Internet-Atlas-map-768x422-70x40.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/>Despite the internet-dependent nature of our world, a thorough understanding of the internet\u2019s physical makeup has only recently emerged, thanks to painstaking work by University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison researchers and their collaborators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Professor of Computer Sciences<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.wisc.edu\/people\/pb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul Barford<\/a>,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Ph.D. candidate<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.cs.wisc.edu\/~rkrish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ramakrishnan (Ram) Durairajan<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and colleagues have developed Internet Atlas, the first detailed map of the internet\u2019s structure worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While average users rarely think of these elements, things like submarine cables \u2014 buried below the ocean floor \u2014 run between continents to enable communication. Data centers in buildings all over the world are packed with servers storing many types of data. Traffic exchange occurs between different service providers at internet exchange points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though these and other elements may be out of sight for the average user, they are crucial pieces of the physical infrastructure that billions of people rely on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Collaborators on the team include<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cs.colgate.edu\/~jsommers\/#home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joel Sommers<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, a UW\u2013Madison alumnus now on the faculty at Colgate University;<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niksun.com\/content.php?id=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walter Willinger<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, chief scientist at the NIKSUN Innovation Center; and graduate and undergraduate research assistants who help with data collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Supported by a Department of Homeland Security grant, Internet Atlas has already attracted considerable attention from publications like<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/540721\/first-detailed-public-map-of-us-internet-backbone-could-make-it-stronger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MIT Technology Review<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg21829125-700-map-of-the-internet-could-make-it-stronger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Scientist<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and others.\u00a0And in February, Barford and Durairajan presented their work at the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsaconference.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RSA Conference<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> in San Francisco, the world\u2019s biggest information security conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Internet Atlas was one of a select group of DHS-funded projects invited to present at the conference.\u00a0\u201cIt was nice recognition\u201d to be chosen, says Barford, since RSA is attended by tens of thousands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mapping the physical internet helps stakeholders boost performance and guard against a number of threats, from terrorism to extreme weather events like hurricanes.\u00a0Furthermore, \u201ca lot of infrastructure is by major right-of-ways, like railroad lines,\u201d says Barford, meaning that an event like a train derailment could end up disrupting internet communications.\u00a0\u201cThe question of \u2018how does mapping contribute to security?\u2019 is one of our fundamental concerns,\u201d says Durairajan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The project has helped direct attention to the problem of shared risk, the subject of an<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/citation.cfm?id=2787499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">influential 2015 paper<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0by the team.\u00a0Physical infrastructure is commonly shared by multiple networking entities, so damage to any particular piece of infrastructure can impact more than one entity.\u00a0\u201cWe quantified that for the first time,\u201d says Barford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Much of the data used to create the Internet Atlas comes from publicly available information, such as what internet service providers publish on their websites.\u00a0Other data has taken more legwork to uncover, such as combing through mundane items like local permits for laying cables.\u00a0\u201cThe core work is grunt work, but by rolling up our sleeves, we assembled a unique data set,\u201d says Barford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now, the team is looking to enhance the maps even further and share their work so it can be deployed by others to boost network performance and security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll complement the static maps with the ability to actually examine the status of the network in real time,\u201d says Barford. \u201cWe\u2019ve built certain capabilities that allow exactly that to be done, and one of the important focuses going forward is to enhance that capability, basically putting the maps in motion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the internet-dependent nature of our world, a thorough understanding of the internet\u2019s physical makeup has only recently emerged, thanks to painstaking work by University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison researchers and their collaborators.
