We can complete a 20 x 10 x 3 cm brick for building in around five hours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As raw material, the test used commercially available simulated lunar soil based on terrestrial volcanic material, processed to mimic the composition and grain sizes of genuine moondust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dlr.de\/sf\/en\/desktopdefault.aspx\/tabid-10953\/19318_read-44871\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar furnace<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">at the DLR German Aerospace Center facility in Cologne has two working setups. As a baseline, 147 curved mirrors focus sunlight into a high-temperature beam to melt the soil grains together. But the weather in northern Europe does not always cooperate, so the Sun is sometimes simulated by an array of xenon lamps more typically found in cinema projectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12216\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12216\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12216\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Solar_furnace_medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"171\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Solar_furnace_medium.jpg 305w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Solar_furnace_medium-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Solar_furnace_medium-70x40.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Solar furnace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The resulting bricks have the equivalent strength of gypsum, and are set to undergo detailed mechanical testing. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some bricks show some warping at the edges, Advenit adds, because their edges cool faster than the centre:\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re looking how to manage this effect, perhaps by occasionally accelerating the printing speed so that less heat accumulates within the brick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cBut for now this project is a proof of concept, showing that such a lunar construction method is indeed feasible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Following this ESA General Support Technology Programme study, the follow-up<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/regolight.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RegoLight<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">project is being backed through the EU\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/horizon2020projects.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horizon 2020<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Advenit adds: \u201cOur demonstration took place in standard atmospheric conditions, but RegoLight will probe the printing of bricks in representative lunar conditions: vacuum and high-temperature extremes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"s_4\" class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_12217\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12217\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12217\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Multi-dome_base_being_constructed_medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"172\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Multi-dome_base_being_constructed_medium.jpg 305w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Multi-dome_base_being_constructed_medium-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Multi-dome_base_being_constructed_medium-70x40.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12217\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lunar base<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ESA\u2019s effort follows a previous<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Building_a_lunar_base_with_3D_printing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lunar 3D printing project<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, but that approach required a binding salt. The new technique calls for only the 3D printer plus solar concentrator to be conveyed to the Moon.This continuing research is part of a range of studies being undertaken by ESA investigating techniques to use in-situ lunar resources for manufacturing infrastructure and hardware.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"s_5\" class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tommaso Ghidini, heading ESA\u2019s Materials and Processes, notes, \u201cFor a mission like building a base on the Moon surface, in-situ resource utilisation will certainly be one of the most important enabling technologies.
