{"id":12413,"date":"2017-05-30T07:08:34","date_gmt":"2017-05-30T07:08:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/?p=12413"},"modified":"2017-05-30T07:08:34","modified_gmt":"2017-05-30T07:08:34","slug":"stormtrooper-at-esa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/stormtrooper-at-esa\/","title":{"rendered":"Stormtrooper at ESA"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_12414\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12414\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12414\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Stormtrooper_at_ESA_node_full_image_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Stormtrooper_at_ESA_node_full_image_2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Stormtrooper_at_ESA_node_full_image_2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stormtrooper at ESTEC, ESA, March 2017<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At first sight it might seem obvious which of these \u2018models\u2019 is the odd one out: standing between the satellites is apparently a Star Wars stormtrooper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the stormtrooper is actually our Rosetta project scientist, Matt Taylor, who is one of three ESA scientists taking the stage at science fiction convention \u2018<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fedcon.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FedCon<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2019 in Bonn, Germany, 2\u20135 June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While Matt will present<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Science\/Rosetta\/Rosetta_reveals_comet_s_water-ice_cycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rosetta<\/a>\u2019<span style=\"color: #000000;\">s incredible adventure at a comet, including its dramatic conclusion, ESA Senior Science Advisor Mark McCaughrean will highlight some of our<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Science\/Rosetta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other exciting missions<\/a>,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to Mercury, Mars and Jupiter, along with missions to study planets around other stars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul McNamara, project scientist for<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/sci.esa.int\/lisa-pathfinder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LISA Pathfinder<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, will explore the science of gravitational waves, and how they are portrayed in the Star Trek universe. Think gravitational wavefronts, continuous graviton beams, fluctuating graviton fields and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Representatives from ESA\u2019s science and operations teams will also be on hand to answer your questions at our exhibition stand. You can also try our \u2018science meets science fiction quiz\u2019 to win ESA goodies. And, of course, keep an eye out for our friendly stormtrooper!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The photograph featured here was taken at<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/About_Us\/ESTEC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESA\u2019s technical heart<\/a>,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> in the Netherlands, and shows test models of various satellites and hardware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the far right is<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/About_Us\/Welcome_to_ESA\/ESA_history\/History_ESRO-4_satellite_1972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESRO-4<\/a>,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> launched in 1972 to study Earth\u2019s atmosphere, ionosphere and radiation belts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/spaceinimages\/Images\/2017\/03\/HEOS-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HEOS-1<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">sits on the other side of the stormtrooper. Launched in 1968, it was the first European probe to venture beyond near-Earth space, in order to study the magnetic fields, radiation and the solar wind outside of Earth\u2019s magnetosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Next in line is the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Human_Spaceflight\/ATV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Automated Transport Vehicle<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">docking assembly, used to dock the resupply ship to the International Space Station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally, at the far left is<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Science\/Cos-B_overview2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COS-B<\/a>,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> which, in 1975, was the first mission launched by ESA following its creation in 1973.
