The aquanauts made regular \u2018waterwalks\u2019 and, by adjusting their buoyancy, they simulated gravity levels found on the Moon or Mars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With its sandy seabed and uneven rocky terrain, the ocean floor around Aquarius provides an ideal Moon-like environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pedro explains: \u201cThe mission was both familiar and unique. Familiar because it resembled spaceflight \u2013 from the mission preparation, timelines, priorities, \u2018launch\u2019 when we dived to the base and daily programme meetings, but the environment was unique living and working at the bottom of the sea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Safety first, as on the Moon<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12653\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12653\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Pedro_Duque_NEEMO-22_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"260\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pedro in Aquarius habitat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ESA astronaut trainer Herv\u00e9 Stevenin joined NEEMO-22 to test a new ESA device designed to help a stranded astronaut on the Moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Being able to rescue someone is an important part of any lunar excursion, but an astronaut would not be able to carry or drag a fallen colleague to safety because spacesuits are heavy and limit movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Lunar Evacuation System Assembly allows for quick recovery of a Moonwalker while keeping the limited mobility of a spacesuit in mind. A foldable pyramid-like structure on wheels opens above the astronaut, it lifts the incapacitated figure using pulleys and places it on a wheeled stretcher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It took only six months to produce the device at ESA\u2019s astronaut centre in Cologne, Germany, from concept to the first prototype built by Dutch company<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hal3projects.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HAL-3 Projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before its assessment at Aquarius, the device was tested in the centre\u2019s large training pool during simulated Moonwalks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pedro and Kjell took turns to be the fallen astronaut and coming to each other\u2019s aid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Herv\u00e9 says, \u201dWe designed it with international cooperation in mind and based on our expertise in spacewalks and experience working with NASA on the preparation of future space exploration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThis lunar simulation capability will allow more tests of innovative European hardware for future human exploration of the Moon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Based on the feedback from the latest trial, ESA will improve the hardware to make the Moonwalk rescue even quicker and easier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a simulated space mission underwater last week, ESA tested an ingenious concept to bring astronauts safely back to base if they are incapacitated during lunar exploration.
