Lunares has no windows, is run on<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lunarclock.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lunar time<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and its occupants can leave only by venturing into an adjoining hanger, which is filled with Moon-like basalt rocks for simulated Moonwalks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This #LunarExpedition1 is the second of four expeditions this year, lasting 15\u201329 August. The mission is controlled from<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/About_Us\/ESTEC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESA\u2019s technical centre<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, focusing on exploring changes to the crew\u2019s biological clocks during their stay. It performs scheduling, communicates with the base and oversees lighting inside the habitat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe analogue astronauts are completely cut off from external light sources. Instead, we control the base\u2019s automated lighting systems,\u201d explains Agata Kolodziejczyk, research fellow in ESA\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/gsp\/ACT\/index.html%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advanced Concepts Team<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, who led the establishment of the Lunares Habitat as part of her research into<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/record\/202172#.WZvY9D6g8Wo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018time architecture\u2019<\/a>\u00a0for <span style=\"color: #000000;\">future off-planet bases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI regard Lunares Habitat as an extremely valuable new chronobiological laboratory for Europe, with full bioethical committee agreements in place. We\u2019ll be checking how the participants\u2019 subjective time perception alters with the changes we induce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe habitat contains an LED light system providing a shifting combination of colours throughout the day, to mimic changes in sunlight. We\u2019re extending the length of this artificial \u2018day\u2019 to put their circadian rhythms out of alignment and induce jet lag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cBut we\u2019re also testing new prototypes of \u2018physiological lights\u2019 that emit in the ultraviolet \u2013 which penetrates through the retina to the brain\u2019s pineal gland \u2013 to see if this is sufficient to reset their body clocks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A survey of US Space Shuttle crews found that half depended on medication to go to sleep in orbit, while other space-dwellers have reported disrupted body clocks, a condition that has been linked to various health problems. Redesigned lighting systems that fit better with human physiology should result in happier, healthier astronauts \u2013 lighting aboard the International Space Station<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/station\/research\/experiments\/2279.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has recently been updated<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0for this very reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In parallel, more than 20 other experiments are also under way. ESA and the<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sci.esa.int\/ilewg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Lunar Exploration Working Group<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">supplied the<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lpi.usra.edu\/meetings\/lpsc2010\/pdf\/1701.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ExoGeoLab lander<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">plus a telescope for use during simulated Moonwalks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Polish ESA Young Graduate Trainee Mateusz Krai\u0144ski has also built a rover and simulator system in his free time.
