From there, Jack and Peggy flew to ESA\u2019s European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the consequences of the devastating hurricane Harvey was the delayed take-off for NASA\u2019s G5 plane out of Houston. In order to cope with this delay and start with postflight science as soon as possible, ESA and NASA worked out an exceptional plan: an ESA plane would retrieve the two NASA astronauts in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, and bring them back directly to Cologne, home of ESA\u2019s astronaut centre. They landed safely in Germany at 14:30 CEST today.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13086\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13086\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13086\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Soyuz_MS-04_landing_large-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Soyuz_MS-04_landing_large-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Soyuz_MS-04_landing_large-70x40.jpg 70w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Soyuz_MS-04_landing_large.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13086\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Soyuz MS-04 landing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After a couple of hours in Cologne for basic medical checks and initial science activities, Peggy and Jack will board the NASA aircraft and depart for Houston.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NASA and ESA medical teams are ensuring as many research experiments as possible can be completed with this change of protocol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ESA\u2019s Director General Jan Woerner says: \u201cSpaceflight is a global endeavour and partnerships created by the International Space Station extend beyond space back to Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cOur thoughts go out to everyone affected by Harvey, our American colleagues and their friends and families. We welcome Jack and Peggy as citizens of Earth and will do everything to make them feel comfortable while ensuring the science continues until they can continue their voyage home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jack, Peggy and Fyodor leave behind ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik and Roscosmos astronaut Sergei Ryazansky\u00a0who will maintain the Space Station and continue running scientific experiments. Mission control centres including Johnson Space Center remain operational.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The next trio to visit are already gearing up for launch on 12 September.
