{"id":13231,"date":"2017-09-18T06:39:18","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T06:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=13231"},"modified":"2017-09-18T06:39:18","modified_gmt":"2017-09-18T06:39:18","slug":"galileos-set-fly-ariane-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/galileos-set-fly-ariane-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Galileos set to fly on Ariane 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"section\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_13232\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13232\" style=\"width: 156px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13232 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Artist_s_view_of_the_configuration_of_Ariane_6_using_two_boosters_A62_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"156\" height=\"556\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13232\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Twin-booster Ariane 6<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Four of the latest set of Galileo navigation satellites will be launched on Ariane 6 rockets \u2013 ESA\u2019s first contract to use Europe\u2019s new vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The launches are scheduled between the end of 2020 and mid-2021, using two Ariane 62 rockets \u2013 the configuration of Europe\u2019s next-generation launch vehicle that is best suited to haul the two 750 kg navigation satellites into their orbits at 23 222 km altitude.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Under development, Ariane 6 is Europe\u2019s newest launcher, designed to extend guaranteed access to space for Europe at a competitive price. It will operate in two configurations, depending on customer needs: Ariane 62 is fitted with two strap-on boosters while Ariane 64 has four.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAriane 6 is not only in full development, but it will soon be put to use,\u201d notes Daniel Neuenschwander, ESA\u2019s Director of Space Transportation. \u201cThis contract is a key step in the upcoming ramp-up phase of Ariane 6.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Galileos have so far either been launched in pairs by Soyuz from French Guiana or in fours by Ariane 5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A new Ariane 5 flight is scheduled for the end of this year, to add four more satellites to the 18-strong constellation already in orbit. This month saw the arrival of the first elements of the rocket in French Guiana, transported aboard the MN\u00a0<i>Colibri\u00a0<\/i>roll-on\/roll-off ship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The contract specifies the decision to use Ariane 62 is subject to the vehicle\u2019s development schedule, with Soyuz available as an alternative. A final choice will be made at the end of 2018, two years before the first launch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Galileo is Europe\u2019s own satellite navigation system, providing an array of positioning, navigation and timing services to Europe and the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"s_1\" class=\"section\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A further eight Galileo \u2018Batch 3\u2019 satellites were ordered last June, to supplement the 26 built so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With 18 satellites now in orbit, Galileo began initial services on 15 December 2016, the first step towards full operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13233\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13233\" style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13233 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Galileo_satellites_node_full_image_2-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"150\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Galileo satellites<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Further launches will continue to build the constellation, which will gradually improve system performance and availability worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The launch contract with Arianespace was signed by Paul Verhoef, ESA\u2019s Director of the Galileo Programme and Navigation-related Activities, and St\u00e9phane Israel, Arianespace\u2019s Chief Executive Officer. ESA signed the contract on behalf of the EU represented by the European Commission \u2013 Galileo\u2019s owner.
