It was taken by ESA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Science\/Herschel\/Herschel_views_deep-space_pearls_on_a_cosmic_string\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herschel Space Observatory<\/a>, a trailblazing mission that observed the sky in far-infrared and submillimetre wavelengths between 2009 and 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">September has often been the month of memorable moments or milestones for Herschel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the satellite was still on Earth, it was in September 2005 that the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Science\/Giant_Herschel_telescope_assembled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assembled telescope<\/a>\u00a0passed its first tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">September 2007 saw the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Science\/Herschel\/Herschel_s_heart_and_brain_mated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mating<\/a>\u00a0of the mission\u2019s \u2018brain\u2019 \u2013 the payload module with the instruments and the cryostat that would keep them at the required temperature, just above absolute zero \u2013 with its \u2018heart\u2019, or the service module, that would to keep the spacecraft going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During the same month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmos.esa.int\/web\/herschel\/observation-planning-workshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scientists gathered<\/a>\u00a0to plan how to get the most of this extraordinary mission from the observing time that would be available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally, the satellite was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Operations\/ESA_en_route_to_the_origins_of_the_Universe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a>\u00a0on 14 May 2009. A few months later, it was again in September that the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Science\/Herschel\/Herschel_views_deep-space_pearls_on_a_cosmic_string\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first Herschel science observations<\/a>\u00a0were performed \u2013 a memorable moment for many astronomers across the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eight years later, as the mission approaches retirement, ESA celebrates the marvellous science that it has achieved and takes stock of the legacy that Herschel leaves behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the areas where Herschel has made substantial contributions concerns the processes that lead to the formation of stars, surveying a large number of stellar nurseries like the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sci.esa.int\/herschel\/59538-herschel-s-view-of-the-w3w4w5-complex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">W3\/W4\/W5 complex<\/a>\u00a0portrayed in this image.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This delicate image showing the intricacies of interstellar bubbles and wisps reveals great turmoil in the W3\/W4\/W5 complex of molecular clouds and star-forming regions.
