{"id":13479,"date":"2017-10-31T10:51:15","date_gmt":"2017-10-31T10:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=13479"},"modified":"2017-10-31T10:51:15","modified_gmt":"2017-10-31T10:51:15","slug":"ariane-6s-vulcain-engine-set-first-firing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/ariane-6s-vulcain-engine-set-first-firing\/","title":{"rendered":"Ariane 6&#8217;s Vulcain engine set for first firing"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_13480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13480\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13480 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Vulcain_2.1_medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"395\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Vulcain_2.1_medium.jpg 305w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Vulcain_2.1_medium-232x300.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vulcain 2.1<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A Vulcain rocket engine recently arrived in Germany ahead of its first test firing in December to demonstrate new capabilities and technologies developed for Ariane 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Vulcain 2.1 will help to propel Ariane 6 in the first 10 minutes of flight, up to an altitude of 200 km.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The engine delivers 135 tonnes of thrust in vacuum, and weighs the same as an Airbus A318 jet engine but provides more than 10 times the power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vulcain parts from around Europe were assembled at the Vernon test centre in France and a demonstration model was sent to the DLR German Aerospace Center test facility in Lampoldshausen for functional tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are several design updates but the main visible difference between the model powering today\u2019s Ariane 5 and the Vulcain 2.1 for Ariane 6 is the nozzle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A more robust nozzle was formed by laser-welding two sheets of metal while creating cooling channels inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Structural reinforcements are 3D printed which increases production rate and lowers manufacturing costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are two main changes in how the engine works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Expensive liquid helium is no longer needed because heated oxygen in the exhaust lines now pressurises the oxygen tank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The new engine is ignited from the ground via the bottom of the nozzle instead of by pyrotechnic devices inside the motor, reducing the cost and weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Over 15 months, three Vulcain test campaigns will provide information to help engineers decide whether adjustments are needed to optimise functional and mechanical behaviour before combined tests start.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Vulcain rocket engine recently arrived in Germany ahead of its first test firing in December to demonstrate new capabilities and technologies developed for Ariane 6.
