Photograph of the container packing a MG.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the genetic modification of mice is increasingly used in medical and biological research, so too is the need for an efficient way to transport cryopreserved embryos and sperm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the preservation of the frozen embryos\/sperm, liquid nitrogen is used to keep the temperatures in the transport containers below \u2212150 \u00b0C. These containers, which are like a dry sipper with liquid nitrogen absorbers embedded inside, are heavy and often expensive, especially when used for short distance transportation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this study, a macroporous silicone gel [1] was tested for its ability to retain liquid nitrogen and its properties. Researchers packed the marshmallow-like gel (MG) into a commercially available vacuum-insulated water bottle and tested its absorption of liquid nitrogen. They found that the gel was able to keep the temperature inside the container below -150 \u00b0C for 10 hours (Figures 1 and 2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13835\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13835\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13835\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/5112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"360\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/5112.jpg 596w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/5112-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13835\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 2. Temperature change of a container made with a MG, compared with containers packed with a cloth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a further test, the researchers placed mouse embryos in the container with the gel for nine hours and found no clear decrease in the embryos\u2019 survival rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since the marshmallow-like gel showed little deterioration after exposure to the liquid nitrogen, [2] the container can be used repeatedly. The process of fabricating MGs is also simple and can be prepared DIY-style by users without experience in chemical synthesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These research results were published online in Applied Materials Today on November 1, 2017.
