Though the International Space Station is regularly restocked by cargo vessels, like today\u2019s Dragon, self-sufficient spaceflight in the future will require us to recycle and reuse precious resources like oxygen. An experiment on its way to space will look into doing just that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"subh\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Breath of fresher air<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Researchers are studying how photosynthesis \u2013 the process by which organisms convert light into energy, producing oxygen as a byproduct \u2013 takes place in space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They loaded the microalgae\u00a0<i>Arthrospira,<\/i>\u00a0commonly known as spirulina, into a photobioreactor, a kind of cylinder bathed in light. On the Space Station, carbon dioxide will be transformed by photosynthesis into oxygen and edible biomass such as proteins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"s_1\" class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though a routine process on Earth, we must understand how it works in space before we can exploit it. The experiment will run for a month as the amount of oxygen from the algae is accurately measured.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13921\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13921\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13921\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Cosmic_farming_medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"203\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Cosmic_farming_medium.jpg 305w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Cosmic_farming_medium-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13921\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AstroPlant plant lab<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The microalgae will be analysed after Dragon returns to Earth next April, looking at the genetic information to build a clearer picture of the effects of weightlessness and radiation on the plant cell.\u00a0<i>Arthrospira<\/i>\u00a0is known to be highly resistant to radiation, but we need to check how well it can stand up to space hazards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This Artemiss pilot project is the first of its kind, and its researchers and engineers hope to follow it up with a longer study that continuously feeds in microalgae.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"s_2\" class=\"section\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The project is part of the Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative, or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Melissa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melissa<\/a>, effort that is developing regenerative technologies for life support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Melissa covers many research and education activities, such as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Human_Spaceflight\/AstroPlant_citizen_science_for_growing_plants_in_space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AstroPlant<\/a>\u00a0citizen science project, which is collecting data on how plants grow under varying degrees of light.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It will soon welcome another technology precursor, Uriniss, which will look into recycling urine to provide nitrogen gas, energy, potential plant nutrients and, of course, water.
