{"id":13998,"date":"2017-12-24T09:29:53","date_gmt":"2017-12-24T09:29:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=13998"},"modified":"2020-05-27T06:19:20","modified_gmt":"2020-05-27T06:19:20","slug":"reindeer-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/reindeer-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Reindeer Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_13999\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13999\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13999\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Reindeer_Island_node_full_image_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"543\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Reindeer_Island_node_full_image_2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Reindeer_Island_node_full_image_2-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13999\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reindeer Island<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission takes us over part of Lake Winnipeg in the Canadian province of Manitoba, with Reindeer Island visible in the lower-right part of the image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">While our friends on the other side of the pond might be able to tell us why this place is called \u2018Reindeer Island\u2019, we believe that this is a rest-stop for Santa Claus during his busy night before Christmas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Smaller islands can be seen along the edges of the image, while the swirling shades of green in the waters is an algal bloom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Although algae grows naturally in the lake, high levels of phosphorus \u2013 found in fertilisers and common household products \u2013 seeping into the water have caused a steady surge of toxic cyanobacteria, or blue\u2013green algae, posing a threat to ecology and human health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Sentinel-2\u2019s frequent revisits over the same area and high resolution allow changes in inland water bodies and the coastal environment to be closely monitored.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">With its 13 spectral channels, the mission\u2019s novel imager can capture water quality indicators such as the surface concentration of chlorophyll, detect harmful algal blooms and measure water clarity \u2013 giving a clear indication of the health and pollution levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">By providing measurements of water quality and detecting changes, Sentinel-2 supports the sustainable management of water resources, and can also indicate areas that are safe, or unsafe, for swimming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">This image, also featured on the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/spaceinvideos\/Videos\/2017\/12\/Earth_from_Space_Reindeer_Island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth from Space video programme<\/a>, was captured on 6 October 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission takes us over part of Lake Winnipeg in the Canadian province of Manitoba, with Reindeer Island visible in the lower-right part of the image.
