This next generation solar cell having an area of around 30\u00a0sq. cm boosts the beginning of life efficiency of up to 30.9% and end of life efficiency to 27.5% &#8211; and in the future designers expect to push this figure above 30%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Developed for ESA by a consortium led by German solar cell manufacturer<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.azurspace.com\/index.php\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Azur Space<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cesi.it\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CESI in Italy<\/a>, Germany\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ise.fraunhofer.de\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.qioptiq.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Qioptiq<\/a>\u00a0in the UK,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.umicore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Umicore<\/a>\u00a0in Belgium,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tf2devices.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tf2 devices<\/a>\u00a0in the Netherlands, and Finland\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tut.fi\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tampere University of Technology<\/a>, this design is a \u2018four-junction\u2019 0.1 mm-thick device containing four layers of different materials (<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aluminium_gallium_indium_phosphide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AlGaInP<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wolframalpha.com\/input\/?i=AlGaInAs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AlGaInAs<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azom.com\/article.aspx?ArticleID=8485\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GaInAs<\/a>,<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germanium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ge<\/a>) to absorb separate wavelengths of sunlight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">This design was originated through ESA\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Shaping_the_Future\/About_the_Technology_Research_Programme_TRP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology Research Programme<\/a>\u00a0with further development and qualification testing supported through the Agency\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/artes.esa.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ARTES<\/a>, Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems, programme.
