On the World Polio Day, WHO announces wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) has been eradicated worldwide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the eradication of smallpox and wild poliovirus type 2, this news represents a historic achievement for humanity, according to WHO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\nachievement of polio eradication will be a milestone for global health.\nCommitment from partners and countries, coupled with innovation, means of the\nthree wild polio serotypes, only type one remains,\u201d said Dr Tedros Adhanom\nGhebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr.\nTA Ghebreyesus is also Chair of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)\nPolio Oversight Board \u00a0has said, \u201cWe\nremain fully committed to ensuring that all necessary resources are made\navailable to eradicate all poliovirus strains.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We\nurge all our other stakeholders and partners to also stay the course until final\nsuccess is achieved.” he added,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are three individual and immunologically-distinct wild\npoliovirus strains: wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1), wild poliovirus type 2\n(WPV2) and wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptomatically, all three strains are identical, in that they\ncause irreversible paralysis or even death. But there are genetic and virologic\ndifferences which make these three strains three separate viruses that must\neach be eradicated individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WPV3 is the second strain of the poliovirus to be wiped out,\nfollowing the certification of the eradication of WPV2 in 2015. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last case of WPV3 was detected in northern Nigeria in 2012. Since then, the strength and reach of the eradication programme\u2019s global surveillance system has been critical to verify that this strain is truly gone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investments in skilled workers, innovative tools and a global network of laboratories have helped determine that no WPV3 exists anywhere in the world, apart from specimens locked in secure containment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eradicating WPV3 proves that a polio-free world is achievable.\nKey to success will be the ongoing commitment of the international development\ncommunity.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To this effect, as part of a Global Health Week in Abu Dhabi,\nUnited Arab Emirates, in November 2019, the Reaching the Last Mile Forum will\nfocus international attention on eradication of the world\u2019s deadliest diseases\nand provide an opportunity for world leaders and civil society organizations,\nnotably Rotary International which is at the origin of this effort, to\ncontribute to the last mile of polio eradication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GPEI 2019\u20132023 Investment Case lays out the impact of\ninvesting in polio eradication.\u00a0 The polio eradication efforts have saved\nthe world more than US$27 billion in health costs since 1988. A sustained\npolio-free world will generate further US$14 billion in savings by 2050, compared\nto the cost countries would incur for controlling the virus indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GPEI is a public-private\nglobal effort made up of national governments, partners including the World\nHealth Organization, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control\nand Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a broad\nrange of\u00a0long-term supporters<\/a>.<\/p>\n
