This reduction is particularly visible in northern Italy which coincides with its nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The animation shows the fluctuation of nitrogen dioxide emissions across Europe from 1 January 2020 until 11 March 2020, using a 10-day moving average. These data are thanks to the Tropomi instrument on board the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDEsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMDAzMTMuMTg2ODYyODEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5lc2EuaW50L0FwcGxpY2F0aW9ucy9PYnNlcnZpbmdfdGhlX0VhcnRoL0NvcGVybmljdXMvU2VudGluZWwtNVAifQ.Vk_o95xD9hq5qEfvBqdf6Pp2EDQSHuMNtDsjV3jfCY4\/br\/76077040810-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite<\/a>\u00a0which maps a multitude of air pollutants around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ESA\u2019s Claus Zehner, ESA\u2019s Copernicus Sentinel-5P mission manager, comments, \u201cThe decline in nitrogen dioxide emissions over the Po Valley in northern Italy is particularly evident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough there could be slight variations in the data due to cloud cover and changing weather, we are very confident that the reduction in emissions that we can see, coincides with the lockdown in Italy causing less traffic and industrial activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Josef Aschbacher, ESA\u2019s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, says, \u201cCopernicus Sentinel-5P Tropomi is the most accurate instrument today that measures air pollution from space. These measurements, globally available thanks to the free and open data policy, provide crucial information for citizens and decision makers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was recently declared a pandemic by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDIsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMDAzMTMuMTg2ODYyODEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy53aG8uaW50L2VtZXJnZW5jaWVzL2Rpc2Vhc2VzL25vdmVsLWNvcm9uYXZpcnVzLTIwMTkifQ.wPaLfQ2eg4NhREHlBk_1UGdnoFS3f6o3zz_TW05H7eU\/br\/76077040810-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Health Organisation<\/a>, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDMsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMDAzMTMuMTg2ODYyODEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy50aGVndWFyZGlhbi5jb20vd29ybGQvbmctaW50ZXJhY3RpdmUvMjAyMC9tYXIvMDQvY29yb25hdmlydXMtbWFwLWNhc2VzLWhvdy1jb3ZpZC0xOS1pcy1zcHJlYWRpbmcifQ.e6eMppwyVLtqkn6HFM2a9VQgRfbQBwdyzsPx1YN9rr4\/br\/76077040810-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 125 000<\/a>\u00a0current cases of the disease reported globally. In Italy, the number of coronavirus cases drastically soared making it the country with the largest number of cases outside of China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an attempt to reduce the spread of the disease, Italy\u2019s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced a lockdown of the entire country \u2013 closing schools, restaurants, bars, museums and other venues across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sentinel-5 Precursor \u2013 also known as Sentinel-5P \u2013 is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring our atmosphere. The satellite carries the Tropomi instrument to map a multitude of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide and aerosols \u2013 all of which affect the air we breathe and therefore our health, and our climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given the growing importance and need for the continuous monitoring of air quality, the upcoming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDQsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMDAzMTMuMTg2ODYyODEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5lc2EuaW50L0FwcGxpY2F0aW9ucy9PYnNlcnZpbmdfdGhlX0VhcnRoL0NvcGVybmljdXMvU2VudGluZWwtNF9hbmRfLTUifQ.MQpRAZL3Y1TTfv9llXTpGs-6Zy115PASjY4MDMglGkQ\/br\/76077040810-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Copernicus Sentinel-4 and Sentinel-5 missions<\/a>, as part of the EU\u2019s Copernicus programme, will monitor key air quality trace gases and aerosols.
