{"id":19498,"date":"2020-12-20T07:33:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-20T01:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=19498"},"modified":"2020-12-19T21:36:40","modified_gmt":"2020-12-19T15:51:40","slug":"microbial-super-strains-for-high-quality-biofertilizer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/microbial-super-strains-for-high-quality-biofertilizer\/","title":{"rendered":"Microbial super strains for high quality biofertilizer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/biofertilizer-675x322.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19499\" width=\"763\" height=\"363\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/biofertilizer-675x322.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/biofertilizer-228x109.jpg 228w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/biofertilizer.jpg 724w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately one third of all food produced, about 1.3 billion tons at an estimated value of US$1 trillion, is thrown away annually by consumers or is spoiled during harvesting and transportation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020 alone, Malaysia produced about 17,000 tons of food waste, creating a huge challenge for its management and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>High quality biofertilizer can be generated from food waste mixed with microbial super strains.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers, led by Md Zahangir Alam at IIUM\u2019s Bioenvironmental Engineering Research Centre, are working on ways to overcome current issues in food waste composting technologies, which involve long composting times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team has found several super strains of microbes containing hydrolytic enzymes that can biodegrade organic matter into a high quality biofertilizer within a period of five days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers mixed their potential microbes \u00a0with 50 kilograms of fresh food waste added daily to a 300 kilogram-capacity composter together with coco peat\/sawdust over a period of four days. The process produced 2,000 kilograms of biofertilizer in a month. They evaluated the quality of their product and tested it on IIUM\u2019s grounds for garden management, vegetable farming, and in paddy crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysians use about 1.5 million tons a year of fertilizer, costing billions of ringgit.
