{"id":20105,"date":"2021-03-08T12:21:18","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T06:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=20105"},"modified":"2021-03-08T12:21:52","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T06:36:52","slug":"nasa-awards-maps-contract-for-sample-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/nasa-awards-maps-contract-for-sample-return\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Awards MAPS Contract for Sample Return"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA has awarded the Mars Ascent Propulsion System (MAPS) contract to Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation of Elkton, Maryland, to provide propulsion support and products for spaceflight missions at the agency\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coupled with the successful touchdown of the Mars Perseverance rover, this award moves NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) one step closer to realizing Mars Sample Return (MSR), a highly ambitious planetary exploration program that will build upon decades of science, knowledge, and experience of Mars exploration. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"675\" height=\"505\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/nasa-award-675x505.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20106\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/nasa-award-675x505.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/nasa-award-535x400.jpg 535w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/nasa-award-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/nasa-award-155x116.jpg 155w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/nasa-award.jpg 985w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost-plus, fixed-fee contract has a potential mission services value of $60.2 million and a maximum potential value of $84.5 million. Work on MAPS begins immediately with a 14-month base period, followed by two option periods that may be exercised at NASA\u2019s discretion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the next steps of the MSR campaign, NASA and ESA will provide components for a Sample Retrieval Lander mission and an Earth Return Orbiter mission according to press release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sample Retrieval Lander mission will deliver a Sample Fetch Rover and Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) to the surface of Mars. Marshall is responsible for the MSR Program\u2019s MAV element, which is a two-stage vehicle that will be a critical element in supporting MSR to retrieve and return the samples that the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover will collect for return to Earth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Martian environment will be a significant factor in the design, development, manufacturing, testing, and qualification of two different solid rocket motors with multiple deliveries of each.
