A new idea using space telescope technology could help rangers in their difficult fight against illegal hunters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Three students from Cranfield University in the UK are drawing on high-resolution imaging technology originally developed for space telescopes, using it in an unmanned aerial vehicle, or UAV, to help rangers in their battle against poachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cOur proposal intends to develop lightweight and autonomous UAVs for observing in two main sectors: wildlife conservation, and search and rescue,\u201d explained Idriss Sisaid. He and fellow students Enrique Garcia Bourne and Edward Anastassacos won this year\u2019s Space Solutions University (S2UN) Challenge, set by ESA\u2019s Technology Transfer Programme Office.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_obj r_img\">\n<div class=\"img\">\n<div class=\"txt\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_2030\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2030\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2030 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/S2UN_Challenge_2014_winners_medium-300x199.png\" alt=\"Winners\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/S2UN_Challenge_2014_winners_medium-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/S2UN_Challenge_2014_winners_medium.png 305w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Winners<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With the ESA-patented technology \u201cImaging Optics and Optical Device for Mapping a Curved Image Field\u201d, the team\u2019s Horus project could produce realtime aerial imagery at a lower cost and offer greater responsiveness than existing alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Installed on UAVs, it could monitor large areas, helping rangers to know where poachers are hunting animals like rhinoceros and elephants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"s_2\" class=\"section\" style=\"color: #031e31; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cESA patent 561 presented us with a platform technology to produce inherently high-quality, non-distorted and wide-angle images,\u201d said Enrique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"section\" style=\"color: rgb(3, 30, 49); text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhen applied to UAVs, this allows far greater coverage and improved performance when compared to UAVs with more traditional cameras.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"section\" style=\"color: #031e31;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201d In emergencies, when every second counts, the UAV can scan large areas in real time, providing response teams with detailed information for immediate use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_obj l_img\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"img\">\n<div class=\"txt\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"txt\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_2031\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2031\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2031 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Elephants_and_buffaloes_medium-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Elephants and buffaloes at Virunga National Park\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Elephants_and_buffaloes_medium-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Elephants_and_buffaloes_medium.jpg 305w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2031\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elephants and buffaloes at Virunga National Park<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Similarly, wildlife conservation requires constant coverage over vast areas to counter poaching. In providing rangers and non-governmental organisations with this crucial monitoring ability at limited cost, Horus could boost effectiveness and efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"section\" style=\"color: #031e31; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cOur success in ESA\u2019s Challenge is the first step of the project,\u201d notes Edward. \u201cContinued development of the imaging system based on the ESA\u2019s patent will bring us one step closer to the prototyping phase. MOBED would use a removable mattress that would greatly reduce the amount of disposable material consumed while improving the ergonomics of operating-theatre furnishings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The business plan of the Italian team from Politecnico di Torino also centred on patent 578. The Petroleum Innovative Environmental Remediation (PIER) project seeks to produce deployable booms for rapid containment of oil spills from tankers, both in harbours and in the open sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_obj r_img\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"img\">\n<div class=\"txt\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Taking advantage of ESA\u2019s technology, PIER introduces several novelties, such as a membrane for oil\u2013water separation, innovative and reliable materials, and more efficient storage and shipment.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"txt\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The team from the University of Coimbra in Portugal proposed the CarFresh project, a solar panel for windshields that cools idle vehicles like an air conditioner, especially those parked in the Sun on hot days. Based on ESA patent 517 \u201cDirect Voltage Switching Converter\u201d, it would deliver greater efficiency by maximising the energy generated through its solar panel.
