{"id":20528,"date":"2021-05-09T17:14:10","date_gmt":"2021-05-09T11:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=20528"},"modified":"2021-05-09T21:38:14","modified_gmt":"2021-05-09T15:53:14","slug":"nasa-selects-contractor-for-quiet-supersonic-flight-community-testing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/nasa-selects-contractor-for-quiet-supersonic-flight-community-testing\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Selects Contractor for Quiet Supersonic Flight Community Testing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/flying-supersonic-675x506.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20529\" width=\"849\" height=\"636\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/flying-supersonic-675x506.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/flying-supersonic-533x400.jpg 533w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/flying-supersonic-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/flying-supersonic-155x116.jpg 155w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/flying-supersonic.jpg 985w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA has selected a contract to Harris Miller Miller &amp; Hanson Inc. of Burlington, Massachusetts, to support a national campaign of community overflight tests using the agency\u2019s X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology research aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This cost-plus-fixed-fee, indefinite-quantity contract has a maximum potential value of approximately $29 million with an eight-year period of performance.NASA is designing and building the X-59 research aircraft \u2013 a piloted, single-seat supersonic X-plane \u2013 with technology that reduces the loudness of a sonic boom to that of a gentle thump.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA&#8217;s has said aeronautical innovators are leading a team across government and industry to collect data that could allow supersonic flight over land, dramatically reducing travel time within the United States or to anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scope of the work under this contract includes supporting NASA in the planning, execution, and documentation of phase three of the agency\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/lowboom\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Low-Boom Flight Demonstration mission<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA currently is working with Lockheed Martin Skunk Works of Palmdale, California, to design, build and conduct initial flight testing of the X-59 research aircraft as part of phase one of the mission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team will work during phase two to prove the X-59 performs as designed and is safe to fly in the national airspace.
