Although&nbsp;this may not appear like the biggest number this represents significant growth from the current market size;&nbsp;a greater than&nbsp;a&nbsp;9-fold increase from the calculated 2021 revenue&nbsp;for&nbsp;the most mature extrusion\/placement technology&nbsp;is expected.&nbsp;Michael Papish from&nbsp;Markforged&nbsp;stated to&nbsp;IDTechEx&nbsp;that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em><em>Advanced composite materials&nbsp;<\/em><em>opens<\/em><em>&nbsp;up new ways to create lighter, stronger parts with less waste in a fraction of the time of traditional manufacturing methods, making them a critical part of an additive manufacturing strategy. We\u2019ve seen demand for new composites and methods grow; in response to customer needs, we\u2019ll launch the FX20 printer later this year, the biggest,&nbsp;<\/em><em>fastest<\/em><em>&nbsp;and most sophisticated printer we\u2019ve ever developed, which will open up new composite applications in aerospace,&nbsp;<\/em><em>defense<\/em><em>, automotive and oil &amp; gas.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Over the next 10 years, the global additive market is projected to grow 10x and we believe advanced composite printers and materials will play a key role as manufacturers look for new ways to overcome their supply chain challenges.<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are numerous&nbsp;main reasons that we are on the cusp of this significant growth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Technology maturity.<\/strong>\u00a0This industry has benefitted from the\u00a0development of 3D\u00a0printing polymers and metals, but there are\u00a0special considerations from the\u00a0print\u00a0head through to the software\u00a0that had to further develop\u00a0to\u00a0fully utilize\u00a0the anisotropic properties\u00a0from the\u00a0fibers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<strong>Application\u00a0maturity.<\/strong>\u00a0It takes time for\u00a0end-users to find the value-add\u00a0applications\u00a0and prove out the technology. This\u00a0has now happened for numerous sectors with benefits ranging from\u00a0lightweighting\u00a0through to reducing inventory costs or\u00a0downtime with replacement tools,\u00a0jigs,\u00a0or fixtures.\u00a0The applications will not be the high-volume end-use parts that\u00a0grab\u00a0headlines and\u00a0that\u00a0many\u00a0initially\u00a0aspire to, but nevertheless,\u00a0tooling,\u00a0key\u00a0roles\u00a0on the manufacturing floor, and low-mid volume part\u00a0production are\u00a0still\u00a0very profitable fields.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<strong>Supply chain\u00a0maturity.\u00a0<\/strong>This is often a challenge for a young industry, but\u00a0the market has seen key partnerships from material manufacturers to distributors that have\u00a0helped\u00a0remove this pain\u00a0point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given this,&nbsp;it is unsurprising that the&nbsp;funding, market launches, and new entrants&nbsp;have&nbsp;dramatically increased&nbsp;in recent years.&nbsp;This competition is&nbsp;healthy,&nbsp;a rising tide lifts all boats,&nbsp;and&nbsp;there are different&nbsp;business models;&nbsp;the only issue may be in IP lawsuits that could slow this growth.&nbsp;There is a significant amount of capital&nbsp;investment in this field&nbsp;and with that&nbsp;IDTechEx are anticipating some M&amp;A activity and,&nbsp;in the longer&nbsp;term,&nbsp;consolidation in the number of players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The technology&nbsp;progression is also a long way from being complete.
