Many buildings directly affected by the devastating blast in August 2020 remain standing and the use of NDT will help to identify if and where any repairs are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe IAEA\u2019s NDT-related expertise can play a crucial role in disaster prevention and management,\u201d said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. \u201cThe Agency is providing technical support in this area to help Lebanon examine whether damaged buildings are safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IAEA team \u2013 including three experts from Italy, Malaysia and Spain, and one IAEA staff member \u2013 is carrying out practical NDT training with specialized equipment in buildings in central Beirut that were affected by the explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IAEA states, the Agency has also supported Lebanon\u2019s emergency response efforts in other areas, including by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=4tNED-2FM8iDZJQyQ53jATUSLwDZSPlvqE6Sb7GVONAyQicplHdS9sGdZjHMBM5RdegUShZJV94-2FXNyths56uz-2BuoJGpAGO9Acfii6RshoGZ73H48acjZUqz2im6Hg6IrviLiDnJOqtrbuSY4-2BU6-2FRduDggtzZKfGOiAqCp9KXfa0-3DTsiQ_atJWz-2F57UhGGlDNlsqnR2CS5p8HPplAuHRkThiVrBX405lh-2Ff7bClnJXaP1gR2z3edYG8jqk607cWb1JIRiiXjfDTv-2BIyJZT8PVN-2Fc4ISkBNJbcMKETfbvPy8Kvt-2FR59y7B1hXow-2F0ceLNjOUVlYrl7YSlaLElB8hbQ4KKmd8C0uwbLkZ-2FmGWoEv7RN-2F2IOZcPJ1JuNsNjH4C09VlcnlpB5P2F3SJyTFYb3sGSlE4WuWUxh6JGoa7EiTzxt6Xb4VxRMPePGxc5Zxk-2FJOVavplhBXCcKYcJ61kL-2FnKwADYR-2F4vchNnmdoES9Tb6xAk8K9xrPSDTAfroT0IlsGQIieyOMSV19GGI9YV-2BWoHq1rLi8-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sending an Assistance Mission<\/a>\u00a0to Lebanon in September 2020. It concluded that radiation levels had not increased as a result of the blast. The Agency also provided health-related support, as many hospitals were damaged in the explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have faced many challenges in our response to the explosion,\u201d said Mr Bilal Nsouli, Director General of the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission (LAEC). \u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic has added a layer of complexity.
