NASA released its first digital, interactive graphic novel on Saturday in celebration of National Comic Book Day. \u201cFirst Woman: NASA\u2019s Promise for Humanity\u201d<\/em> imagines the story of Callie Rodriguez, the first woman to explore the Moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Callie\u2019s story is fictional, the first woman and the first person of color will walk on the Moon, achieving these historic milestones as part of NASA\u2019s\u00a0Artemis<\/a>\u00a0missions. Through this graphic novel, NASA aims to inspire the next generation of explorers \u2013 the Artemis Generation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe story of Callie captures how passion, dedication, and perseverance allow us to turn our dreams into reality,\u201d said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy. \u201cCallie, much like myself, grew her skills, seized learning opportunities, and overcame challenges to become a NASA astronaut. Her diversity is reflected in our own astronaut corps today \u2013\u00a0it’s important we can see ourselves as the explorers among the stars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 40-page comic book highlights NASA\u00a0technologies<\/a>\u00a0for traveling to, landing on, and exploring the Moon. The digital format comes to life, letting readers engage and interact through augmented reality elements using the First Woman website or their mobile devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can be download, read, and interact with\u00a0\u201cFirst Woman\u201d<\/a>\u00a0or listen to the audio version exclusively on NASA\u2019s\u00a0SoundCloud<\/a>. Readers can download the First Woman application for\u00a0Android<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0iOS<\/a>\u00a0to explore life-sized environments and 3D objects, including NASA\u2019s\u00a0Orion<\/a>\u00a0spacecraft and the lunar surface. Additional content includes videos, games, challenges to earn collector badges, and ways to virtually participate in NASA missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe crafted this graphic novel and digital ecosystem to share NASA\u2019s work in a different and exciting way,\u201d said Derek Wang, director of communications for the Space Technology Mission Directorate at the agency\u2019s Headquarters in Washington. \u201cWe set out to make the content both engaging and accessible. From space fans of all ages to hardworking educators looking for new ways to get students excited about STEM, we hope that there is something for everyone to enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
