{"id":21651,"date":"2021-10-24T07:58:02","date_gmt":"2021-10-24T02:13:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=21651"},"modified":"2021-10-24T08:02:41","modified_gmt":"2021-10-24T02:17:41","slug":"proba-1-celebrates-20th-birthday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/proba-1-celebrates-20th-birthday\/","title":{"rendered":"Proba-1 Celebrates 20th Birthday"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On 22nd October, twenty years ago, first small satellite,\u00a0Proba-1 (Project for On-Board<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Applications\/Observing_the_Earth\/Proba-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Autonomy),<\/a>\u00a0was launched by European Space Agency (ESA) with just one goal \u2013 to prove technologies in space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, once in orbit, that same small satellite quickly proved to be not so little in its capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, twenty years on Proba-1, which was intended to survive just two years, is still going strong as an Earth Observation mission and its legacy is already future-proofed into the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Measuring just 60 x 60 x 80 cm, Proba-1 autonomoulsy performs advanced guidance, navigation, and control processing, \u00a0as well as payload resources management. Its two imaging instruments \u2013 the Compact High-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) and the panchromatic High-Resolution Camera (HRC) \u2013 have provided more than 1000 images of more than 1000 sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The images have been vital for monitoring several environmental concerns, from assessing how different lad use strategies in Namibian savannah as affect the vegetation growth, to on vegetation types in Central Nambia\u2019s savannahs, or helping to map and understand alpine snow cover in Swiss National Parks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The micro-satellite was developed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/s.esa.int\/Future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESA&#8217;s General Support Technology Programme (GSTP)<\/a>&nbsp;and built by an industrial consortium led by the Belgian company Verhaert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/proba-1-675x467.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21652\" width=\"842\" height=\"583\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/proba-1-675x467.png 675w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/proba-1-578x400.png 578w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/proba-1-95x65.png 95w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/proba-1-168x116.png 168w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/proba-1.png 722w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Proba-1 marked a change towards small missions in European space industry. While CubeSats and are more and more common and available these days, Proba 1 was ESA\u2019s first venture into small missions. The mission was developed in just three years \u2013 an unheard-of feat at the time when missions often took more than 10 years to launch. It also marked the beginning of a series of Proba satellites, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Proba_Missions\/About_Proba-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proba-2<\/a>, Pr<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Proba_Missions\/Overview2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oba-V<\/a>\u00a0and the currently-in-testing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Proba_Missions\/About_Proba-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proba-3<\/a>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn its time, it was completely innovative,\u201d reminisces Frederic Teston, the Project Manager for Proba. \u201cIn terms of the technology, in terms of the development time, in terms of the low cost \u2013 it was all brand new.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In twenty years, none of the primary units have actually failed and the spacecraft remains operational on all primary systems at this time.
