{"id":22029,"date":"2021-12-26T10:48:13","date_gmt":"2021-12-26T05:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=22029"},"modified":"2021-12-26T10:48:16","modified_gmt":"2021-12-26T05:03:16","slug":"nasa-selects-four-university-teams-for-aviation-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/nasa-selects-four-university-teams-for-aviation-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Selects Four University Teams for Aviation Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NASA\u2019s research focus on sustainable aviation will get some big help from teams of university faculty and students recently selected to participate in the agency\u2019s University Leadership Initiative (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aeroresearch\/programs\/tacp\/ui-uli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ULI<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ULI gives the academic community an opportunity to support&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aeroresearch\/strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA\u2019s aeronautical research goals<\/a>&nbsp;and provide students with valuable experience in solving real-world technical challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAviation of the future has to be climate friendly to keep the world flying, and a great way to do that is to allow tomorrow\u2019s top minds to begin making contributions to these goals while still in school,\u201d said Koushik Datta,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aeroresearch\/programs\/tacp\/uli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ULI project<\/a>&nbsp;manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three of the four teams are working toward lowering or eliminating aircraft emissions, with each team approaching the problem from a slightly different perspective. The fourth team\u2019s autonomy research is in support of NASA\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advanced Air Mobility<\/a>&nbsp;campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/university-led-team-675x462.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22030\" width=\"840\" height=\"575\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/university-led-team-675x462.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/university-led-team-585x400.jpg 585w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/university-led-team-768x526.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/university-led-team-95x65.jpg 95w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/university-led-team-170x116.jpg 170w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/university-led-team.jpg 985w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another key ULI goal is for students to gain experience in leading a multidisciplinary team made up of partners from other universities and industry, including student populations who are underrepresented or have not applied their skills to aviation problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA diverse research team enables more voices to be heard, and more creative ideas to be explored,\u201d said Datta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of four teams were selected for final negotiations that could lead to awards of up to $31.5 million during the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four teams and their research topics are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>University of Central Florida<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team will explore using liquid ammonia \u2013 a non-traditional source \u2013 as fuel for a jet engine and generating electricity from the engine\u2019s exhaust heat, reducing emissions, and saving on fuel. Team members include Georgia Tech, Purdue University, Boeing, GE Research, ANSYS, Southwest Research Institute, and the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Florida State University<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team will consider how hybrid hydrogen-electric power generation could be combined with fuel cell technology to lower emissions. Team members include Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, University at Buffalo, University of Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Raytheon, Boeing, and Advanced Magnet Lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Georgia Institute of Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team will turn its attention to sustainable aviation challenges related to a jet engine\u2019s combustor but in this case the engine is powering a commercial supersonic transport. Team members include Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech, Spelman College, Missouri University of Science and Technology, General Electric, and Aerodyne Research Incorporated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team aims to deliver trustworthy autonomy tools to help Advanced Air Mobility aircraft fly safely through complex airspace, typical of dense urban environments. Team members include Georgia Tech, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, North Carolina A&amp;T State University, University of Nevada at Reno, Lockheed Martin, and Sierra Nevada Corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the fifth time a set of teams have been selected to participate in ULI. Six teams were selected earlier&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aeroresearch\/nasa-selects-teams-for-fourth-round-of-university-research-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in 2021<\/a>, five teams were chosen&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-looks-to-university-teams-to-advance-aviation-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in 2020<\/a>, three teams were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aero\/nasa-aeronautics-selects-three-university-teams-for-research-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced in 2019<\/a>, and five teams were selected for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/university-research-teams-to-study-potential-aeronautical-innovations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inaugural initiative in 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An official notice for the next request for proposals is expected to be posted&nbsp;<a
