{"id":23480,"date":"2022-10-16T11:13:47","date_gmt":"2022-10-16T05:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=23480"},"modified":"2022-10-16T11:13:50","modified_gmt":"2022-10-16T05:28:50","slug":"astronaut-samantha-cristoforetti-returns-from-her-second-mission-to-the-iss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/astronaut-samantha-cristoforetti-returns-from-her-second-mission-to-the-iss\/","title":{"rendered":"Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti returns from her second mission to the ISS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti returned\u00a0to Earth alongside NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren, Bob Hines, and Jessica Watkins, marking the end of her second mission to the International Space Station (ISS), Minerva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collectively known as Crew-4, Samantha and her colleagues returned in Crew Dragon spacecraft Freedom, which was undocked autonomously from the Station on\u00a014\u00a0October 2022 at\u00a018:05\u00a0CEST. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing a series of deorbit burns, Freedom entered Earth\u2019s atmosphere and deployed its parachutes for water landing off the coast of Florida on\u00a014\u00a0October at\u00a022:55 CEST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Samantha-675x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23481\" width=\"841\" height=\"561\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Samantha-675x450.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Samantha-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Samantha-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Samantha-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Samantha-174x116.jpg 174w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Samantha.jpg 1920w\" \/><figcaption>IMAGE: ESA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Crew-4 was launched to the Station on 27 April 2022 and spent nearly six months living and working in orbit as members of ISS Expedition 67.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of her Minerva mission, Samantha supported numerous European experiments and many more international experiments in microgravity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She will now fly directly to Cologne, Germany, where she will be monitored by ESA\u2019s space medicine team as she readapts to Earth\u2019s gravity at ESA\u2019s European Astronaut Centre (EAC) and the German Aerospace Centre\u2019s (DLR) Envihab facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was born on 26 April 1977 in Milan, Italy, an avid reader with a passion for science and technology, and an equal interest in humanities.
