{"id":24147,"date":"2023-07-27T17:52:30","date_gmt":"2023-07-27T12:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=24147"},"modified":"2023-07-27T17:52:33","modified_gmt":"2023-07-27T12:07:33","slug":"northumbria-secures-investment-in-research-facilities-from-the-wolfson-foundation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/northumbria-secures-investment-in-research-facilities-from-the-wolfson-foundation\/","title":{"rendered":"Northumbria secures investment in research facilities from the Wolfson Foundation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An award of \u00a31 million to support the expansion of engineering and surface science research facilities at Northumbria University has been announced today by the Wolfson Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Centered around the University\u2019s existing Materials Characterisation Suite, the investment forms part of a \u00a33 million package that will transform and upgrade laboratory facilities at City Campus in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, dedicated to the analysis and development of materials used in the renewable energy, healthcare, biomaterials, and engineering sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New state-of-the-art equipment to support this scientific research will allow high-resolution nano and microscopic imaging, and sensitive three-dimensional chemical mapping across longer ranges and parameters than is currently achievable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/postman.mynewsdesk.com\/ls\/click?upn=BSwNBFT0tQthl0nrQcTUUYtO1sFi3sd4symAkbykFxrydZS7aBUui8noaCYCbfGsqrR7_atJWz-2F57UhGGlDNlsqnR2CS5p8HPplAuHRkThiVrBX405lh-2Ff7bClnJXaP1gR2z3-2B4zcFCgKK-2BVLz23S78u5frEbCarZM3JNSHqlXER9lT-2Bz6mtTfOojoZlYggd2VfiV1paBC9AAAmDNgBlRbUUd7ZO-2FPlucwpQlir9G-2F6WcktHF785XqdXydVCRGhROy0kYhNCkzY58S3v8AYYrOM5XDRbaKboCFB0j7PScvUtDsoNUUogaU41sp5Pr7Hkac42nLD5LxQDD-2B7-2Bm32EyAc2IxIMgqFIDxvwv9ffDDkS-2FkYEk8mswQcE-2BsqBxjj-2BWb1UqEvPloCDV3GqgNWxW5PnHm-2F8VThpjomjd3Jn9MlmLuvQcyc4M8xWluWb-2B8bE5187gaUuXbb4WAYQ7xBqsb5R-2B3lE8DFiUYUh-2F1SNHUNhDocc-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Wolfson Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;is an independent grant-making charity with an emphasis on education and research which provides funding for projects across the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new technology will complement other facilities available within the region\u2019s universities while providing a unique concentration of advanced equipment available in one location. The facility will support the research of more than 100 academic staff and students annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the specific equipment funded by the award is a focused ion beam scanning electron microscope for the preparation and high-resolution imaging of samples, and a secondary ion mass spectrometer to probe the chemical information of inorganic materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Areas of research excellence already being undertaken using the Materials Characterisation Suite include thin film photovoltaic technologies for terrestrial and space applications, and coatings for more durable medical implants and prosthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/postman.mynewsdesk.com\/ls\/click?upn=BSwNBFT0tQthl0nrQcTUUSv-2FrDAwq8vvjQIsCjD6hq6KD0yZ90KsRnuefvhxBql3GZZS-2BkqwjhUxIJpczUAAUBCQNXILPjpEWGgtmtcCsjg-3DyI1e_atJWz-2F57UhGGlDNlsqnR2CS5p8HPplAuHRkThiVrBX405lh-2Ff7bClnJXaP1gR2z3-2B4zcFCgKK-2BVLz23S78u5frEbCarZM3JNSHqlXER9lT-2Bz6mtTfOojoZlYggd2VfiV1paBC9AAAmDNgBlRbUUd7ZO-2FPlucwpQlir9G-2F6WcktHF785XqdXydVCRGhROy0kYhNCkzY58S3v8AYYrOM5XDdIcX8zoZJioJuccH0VR-2BN6zk97Zjwzv2Hjubu1RuGvnr-2FauUQA6oY-2BwuutsZJBuVQZYkDBoZlSdZA4JGn6IgQ9NNWD0JoCEZ1nHFmzBp2Phdf2V6IH4iw9UnsW3eZewd2VALmBp3U44BNA9C0HoGE1NrzU4hlUhxKnvebqCOwswb0V7ER5YJ02l-2FTqV9vacFRUWVf7FmWYWVE1jLofQTCs-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Guillaume Zoppi<\/a>, whose research specializes in photovoltaic materials used to absorb sunlight and generate electricity, led the funding proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis investment will allow us to upgrade or replace a number of key pieces of technology which will not only be crucial to engineering research but will also have varied and important applications for our specialists in geography and environmental studies, health and life sciences, and many others,\u201d explained Professor Zoppi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an important development in our research journey and will open up further opportunities for collaborations to ensure we can continue developing solutions for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boost to research facilities follows a multi-million-pound investment in Northumbria\u2019s Thin Film Laboratory, Microelectronics, and Communications Laboratory, and the Power Electronics and Space Laboratories in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Andy Long, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Northumbria University said: \u201cOver the last decade, Northumbria has transformed into a research-intensive university with a focus on changing lives and unlocking potential for all. Northumbria\u2019s success was borne out in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 where the university recorded the biggest rise in research power of any UK university for the second time, moving up 27 places to 23<sup>rd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis award from the Wolfson Foundation will help us build on our success even further and cement the University\u2019s global reputation as a center for research excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the engineering and materials research at Northumbria takes place within the Faculty of Engineering and Environment through the
