CERN and Slovenia have a long-standing relationship: in 2016, the Slovenian Minister of Education, Science and Sport, Dr Maja Makovec Bren\u010di\u010d, together with CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti, signed the agreement admitting the Republic of Slovenia to Associate Membership in the pre-stage to Membership of CERN (Image: CERN)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Geneva\u2014<\/strong>CERN\u00a0is welcoming Slovenia as its 25th member state, marking a new chapter in a partnership that spans three decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSlovenia\u2019s full membership in CERN is an exceptional recognition of our science and researchers,\u201d said Dr. Igor Papi\u010d, Slovenia\u2019s Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFurthermore, it reaffirms and strengthens Slovenia\u2019s reputation as a nation building its future on knowledge and science. Indeed, apart from its beautiful natural landscapes, knowledge is the only true natural wealth of our country. For this reason, we have allocated record financial resources to science, research and innovation. Moreover, we have enshrined the obligation to increase these funds annually in the Scientific Research and Innovation Activities Act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn behalf of the CERN Council, I warmly welcome Slovenia as the newest member state of CERN,\u201d said Costas Fountas, president of the CERN Council. \u201cSlovenia has a longstanding relationship with CERN, with continuous involvement of the Slovenian science community over many decades in the ATLAS experiment in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSlovenia and CERN have been collaborating closely for more than 30 years, and I am delighted to welcome Slovenia to the group of CERN Member States,\u201d said Fabiola Gianotti, CERN Director-General. \u201cI am sure that tighter bounds will be mutually beneficial to CERN and Slovenia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slovenian physicists contributed to the CERN program long before Slovenia became an independent state in 1991, participating in an experiment at the\u00a0Low-Energy Antiproton Ring<\/a>\u00a0(LEAR) and in the\u00a0DELPHI experiment<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 part of CERN\u2019s previous large accelerator, the\u00a0Large Electron\u2013Positron collider<\/a>\u00a0(LEP). In 1991, CERN and the Executive Council of the Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia concluded a Cooperation Agreement concerning the further development of scientific and technical cooperation on CERN research projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, Slovenian physicists have been participating in the\u00a0ATLAS experiment<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0Large Hadron Collider<\/a>\u00a0(LHC).\u00a0Their activities range from research and development to construction and commissioning, and the harvesting of physics results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Slovenian\u00a0Tier 2 data center in Ljubljana<\/a>, which is part of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid, the focus has been on silicon tracking, protection devices, and computing. Slovenian scientists and students have played leading roles in several physics analyses, focusing on identifying signals that point to physics beyond the Standard Model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, Slovenia is heavily involved in projects to upgrade the ATLAS detector for the High-Luminosity LHC, especially the upgrade of the beam conditions monitor and the silicon strip part of the inner tracker, as well as the novel High-Granularity Timing Detector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a CERN member state, Slovenia will have voting rights in the CERN Council, the organization\u2019s highest decision-making authority. Membership will also enhance opportunities for Slovenian nationals to be recruited by CERN and for Slovenian industry to bid for CERN contracts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
