{"id":27346,"date":"2025-08-04T10:12:45","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T04:27:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/?p=27346"},"modified":"2025-08-04T10:13:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T04:28:20","slug":"helping-me-hindering-you-new-study-reveals-gut-microbial-power-struggle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/helping-me-hindering-you-new-study-reveals-gut-microbial-power-struggle\/","title":{"rendered":"Helping Me, Hindering You: New Study Reveals Gut Microbial Power Struggle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"988\" height=\"804\" src=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/fusobactorium.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27347\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/fusobactorium.webp 988w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/fusobactorium-675x549.webp 675w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/fusobactorium-768x625.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/fusobactorium-150x122.webp 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 988px) 100vw, 988px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Osaka, Japan \u2014<\/strong> Intestinal bacteria are important for\u00a0human\u00a0health,\u00a0as they\u00a0help digest food and regulate immune function.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, it has become clear that\u00a0gut microbiota dysbiosis,\u00a0an imbalance in\u00a0the types and composition of intestinal bacteria, is associated with digestive disorders\u00a0and\u00a0other\u00a0diseases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the mechanism by which bacteria interact in the intestine to\u00a0maintain\u00a0the microbiota\u00a0balance\u00a0remains\u00a0unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A research group led by Associate Professor Koji\u00a0Hosomi\u00a0at\u00a0Osaka Metropolitan University\u2019s\u00a0Graduate School of\u00a0Veterinary Science\u00a0studied\u00a0two bacteria:\u00a0<em>Fusobacteriumvarium<\/em>\u00a0(<em>F.\u00a0varium<\/em>),\u00a0an oral and intestinal bacterium linked\u00a0to\u00a0inflammation and colon cancer, and\u00a0<em>Faecalibacteriumprausnitzii<\/em>\u00a0(<em>F.\u00a0prausnitzii<\/em>), an\u00a0intestinal bacterium\u00a0that produces butyrate, a beneficial compound for health.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research team\u00a0used stool samples from 236 participants. The team then\u00a0analyzed the interactions between these bacteria\u00a0using\u00a0next-generation\u00a0sequencing (NGS)\u00a0and mass spectrometry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results\u00a0revealed that\u00a0<em>F.\u00a0prausnitzii<\/em>\u00a0inhibits the growth of\u00a0<em>F.\u00a0varium<\/em>. This effect\u00a0is due\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0increased\u00a0acidity\u00a0and amount of\u00a0\u03b2-hydroxybutyric acid\u00a0caused by\u00a0<em>F.\u00a0prausnitzii<\/em>.\u00a0In contrast,\u00a0<em>F.\u00a0varium<\/em>\u00a0promotes the growth of\u00a0<em>F.\u00a0prausnitzii<\/em>. This interaction is likely to occur through direct contact between these bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFurther clarification of these relationships may unlock new therapeutic strategies for gut health and disease prevention,\u201d said Professor Hosomi.
