They have to survive six months of complete isolation \u2013 four in darkness because the Sun never rises above the horizon \u2013 while they perform science in one of the most barren places on Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This year, ESA-sponsored medical doctor Beth Healey will monitor five experiments that are helping to prepare for long-duration missions to explore our Solar System. Living in Concordia is similar in many ways to living in space, where crew are cut off from the world without normal sunlight and live in reduced pressure \u2013 Concordia station lies 3200 m above sea level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From searching for life that could survive in these extreme conditions to monitoring how the crew of 13 interact and cope with living in close quarters, Beth will have her hands full as the crew maintain the station and perform Antarctic science for the French and Italian polar institutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Checking the data nearer to sea at Halley<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"s_1\" class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_2872\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2872\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Halley_VI_medium.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2872\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Halley_VI_medium.jpg\" alt=\"Halley VI\" width=\"305\" height=\"198\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Halley_VI_medium.jpg 305w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Halley_VI_medium-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Halley VI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Scientific experiments often compare results taken from different places and time periods. ESA signed an agreement this month with the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0098db;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.antarctica.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">British Antarctic Survey<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to perform two of the five Concordia experiments at their Halley VI station. If this pilot season runs well, ESA will extend the cooperation.Concordia offers ESA scientists a place to investigate how humans adapt to living in isolation and at high altitudes. The crew at Halley experience the same isolation and lack of daylight but live at sea level. This is working towards\u00a0 objective computer software that will give clues to an astronaut\u2019s state of mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"txt\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ask anybody how they feel and most will reply \u2018fine\u2019 but, for mission controllers planning a complex spacewalk or spacecraft docking, having an objective second-opinion could be a lifesaver.The system works by analysing small changes in intonation and grammar, as well as charting how often people talk to each other, to develop an idea of how people feel.The second experiment being run at both sites will test how our eyes adapt to four months of outside darkness and artificial lighting.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"s_3\" class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">David Vaughan, British Antarctic Survey\u2019s director of science, concludes: \u201cWe are committed to supporting excellent science in Antarctica in all disciplines.
