{"id":3345,"date":"2015-03-16T07:56:55","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T07:56:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/?p=3345"},"modified":"2015-03-16T07:56:55","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T07:56:55","slug":"anti-herpes-drug-may-help-control-hiv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/anti-herpes-drug-may-help-control-hiv\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-Herpes Drug May Help Control HIV"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_3346\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3346\" style=\"width: 292px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Structure_of_HIV-292x300_0.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3346\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Structure_of_HIV-292x300_0.jpg\" alt=\"Structure of HIV (Credit: NIH)\" width=\"292\" height=\"300\" title=\"\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Structure of HIV (Credit: NIH)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A drug that\u2019s used to control herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) could reduce levels of HIV in patients who do not have genital herpes, finds a National Institutes of Health (<a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news\/health\/mar2015\/nichd-13.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NIH<\/span><\/a>) study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">The 18-patient study, published online in<em style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"http:\/\/cid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/early\/2015\/03\/03\/cid.civ172.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Clinical Infectious Diseases<\/span><\/a><\/em>, is the first study to demonstrate that the anti-herpes drug, Valacyclovir, does not need HSV-2 to be present to suppress HIV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\u201cThese findings are very encouraging,\u201d senior author Leonid Margolis, Ph.D. head of the Section on Intercellular Interactions at the NIH\u2019s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) said in a statement. \u201cIf valacyclovir\u2019s effectiveness against HIV can be confirmed in a larger cohort, it could be added to the mix of drugs used to suppress the virus, and might prove especially helpful in cases in which HIV has developed resistance to other drugs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">The same research team showed in a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/news\/releases\/Pages\/sep091008_HIV_HSV.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">2008 study<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that acyclovir suppresses HIV in laboratory cultures of HSV-infected human tissues. For the current study, the team used valacyclovir, a structurally similar drug to acyclovir, because it remains in the blood longer than acyclovir \u2014 and therefore, wouldn\u2019t need to be taken as often. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Earlier studies have shown that acyclovir reduces HIV levels in patients infected with both HIV and HSV-2. But this effect is believed to be due to the drug\u2019s ability to reduce immune activity, resulting in fewer active immune cells for HIV to infect. The inherently complicated nature of HIV virus \u2014 in which the virus infects immune cells \u2014 is partly why scientists have not yet come up with a reliably effective\u00a0<a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dddmag.com\/articles\/2015\/02\/journey-hiv-vaccine-endures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">HIV vaccine<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">On the other hand, the lab results showed that the drug likely lowered HIV levels by interfering directly with HIV\u2019s reproductive machinery and did not need the HSV-2 infection.
