Researchers say the tool addresses a growing challenge: the rapid expansion of scientific publishing has left humans struggling to process the sheer volume of papers, with reviews often taking months or years to complete.

MetaBeeAI automatically extracts, organizes, benchmarks and analyzes information from large sets of full-text papers. Parkinson’s team tested the system on nearly 1,000 studies examining pesticides and bees, an area critical to biodiversity and food security.

“The system is not designed to replace scientists. Instead, MetaBeeAI supports researchers by reducing repetitive workloads and allowing them to focus on interpretation, decision-making and scientific insight,” Parkinson said.

The study found the system performed well in factual extraction tasks, such as identifying bee species and pesticide compounds. Iterative expert feedback improved the reliability of AI-generated outputs over time.

Researchers believe the framework could be adapted for medicine, public health, climate science, toxicology and education. They stressed the importance of human oversight in AI systems, citing concerns about hallucinations, reproducibility and misinformation.

By helping scientists synthesize evidence more efficiently, systems like MetaBeeAI could accelerate discoveries, strengthen evidence-based policy and support faster responses to global challenges including climate change, biodiversity loss and public health crises.

Parkinson said the project represents a vision of AI that works alongside human expertise rather than replacing it, keeping researchers at the center of scientific decision-making.

LONDON, May 28 – A new artificial intelligence system called MetaBeeAI could transform how evidence is gathered across scientific fields, according to Dr. Rachel Parkinson, the lead researcher on the project.
