From hot springs to magma, this energy provides a clean, sustainable resource that can be used to generate electricity, heat buildings, grow plants in greenhouses and many other applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These energy sites exist underground, but often in remote areas, making them difficult, expensive and time-consuming to explore and measure. While the potential of geothermal energy worldwide remains vast, more effort is needed to develop and harness it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To help facilitate their exploitation, scientists from ESA and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) have used gravity measurements from the GOCE mission to produce an\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #0098db;\" href=\"http:\/\/irena.masdar.ac.ae\/?map=1046%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">online tool<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that indicates areas likely to possess geothermal potential, narrowing the search for prospectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3988\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Free_air_gravity_anomaly_small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3988\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Free_air_gravity_anomaly_small.jpg\" alt=\"Free air gravity anomaly\" width=\"170\" height=\"121\" title=\"\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Free air gravity anomaly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The tool\u2019s maps show\u00a0certain characteristics that may help in the search for geothermal reservoirs, including areas with thin crusts, subduction zones and young magmatic activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThese maps can help make a strong business case for geothermal development where none existed before,\u201d said Henning Wuester, Director of IRENA\u2019s Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIn doing so, the tool provides a shortcut for lengthy and costly explorations and unlocks the potential of geothermal energy as a reliable and clean contribution to the world\u2019s energy mix.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After a potential site location has been selected using the online tool, ground surveys and seismic measurements are still needed to determine the exact points for energy extraction, but the new resource is a step towards developing a comprehensive geothermal prospecting technique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The maps outline two specific global gravity anomalies: \u2018Bouguer\u2019 and \u2018free air\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"s_2\" class=\"section\" style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #031e31; text-align: justify;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_3990\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3990\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/GOCE_small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3990\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/GOCE_small.jpg\" alt=\"GOCE\" width=\"170\" height=\"127\" title=\"\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOCE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The free air gravity map provides information on geological structures, while the Bouguer gravity anomaly map combines GOCE data with information of global topography to show differences in crustal thickness. Together, the maps depict characteristics unique to geothermal reservoirs.The two maps are complementary and form a basis to discriminate and classify different terrains at a country-wide scale.GOCE\u2019s mission ended in October 2013 when it ran out of fuel and subsequently reentered Earth\u2019s atmosphere.
