Friedman Lab\/USC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A genome-wide association study conducted by an international team led by the University of Southern California identified Nox<sub>3<\/sub>\u00a0as a critical gene for susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss in mice.\u00a0 The gene, which is almost exclusively expressed in the inner ear, was identified in a study published in the April 16 edition of\u00a0<em style=\"font-style: italic;\">PLOS Genetics<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Researchers led by Rick A. Friedman, M.D. Ph.D., professor of otolaryngology and neurosurgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, used 64 of the 100 strains of mice in the Hybrid Mouse Diversity panel, enabling the team to increase the statistical power of its analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Previous studies that looked at gene association for noise-induced hearing loss in people were small in size and their results were not replicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cUnderstanding the biological processes that affect susceptibility to hearing loss due to loud noise exposure is an important factor in reducing the risk,\u201d Friedman said in a statement.\u00a0 \u201cWe have made great advances in hearing restoration, but nothing can compare to protecting the hearing you have and preventing hearing loss in the first place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While more research must be done before any clinical recommendations can be made, study authors said those who might be more genetically vulnerable to this type of hearing loss may want to take extra precautions before being exposed to harmful noises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common work-related illnesses in the US, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Approximately 26 million, or 17 percent of adults aged 20 to 69 years, have suffered permanent hearing damage from excessive exposure to noise, according to the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #b8292f;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/noise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biosciencetechnology.com\/news\/2015\/04\/noise-related-hearing-loss-might-be-your-genes?et_cid=4521491&amp;et_rid=423855790&amp;type=image\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biosciencetechnology<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A genome-wide association study conducted by an international team led by the University of Southern California identified Nox3\u00a0as a critical gene for susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss in mice.\u00a0 The gene, which is almost exclusively expressed in the inner ear, was identified in a study published in the April 16 edition of\u00a0PLOS Genetics.
