Moore Professor of Bioengineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Vardi, Rice\u2019s Karen Ostrum George Distinguished Service Professor of Computational Engineering and professor of computer science, are among 84 new\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/rice.pr-optout.com\/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d8%2c%3b8A3-%3eLCE59.%3a0%40%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=4344083&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=73920&amp;Action=Follow+Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Academy of Sciences<\/a>\u00a0members\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/rice.pr-optout.com\/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d8%2c%3b8A3-%3eLCE59.%3a0%40%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=4344083&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=73919&amp;Action=Follow+Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced Tuesday<\/a>. Richards-Kortum was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2008 and Vardi in 2002.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222; text-align: justify;\">The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine (whose name will change\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1811118179\"><span class=\"aQJ\">July 1<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to National Academy of Medicine) are private, nonprofit membership organizations that elect the country\u2019s leading scientists, engineers and medical professionals and engage in a wide variety of activities to advance research and knowledge in science, engineering and medicine. It has really been my privilege to work with such a wonderful team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222; text-align: justify;\">Richards-Kortum joined Rice&#8217;s faculty in 2005. Her laboratory focuses on translating research in nanotechnology, molecular imaging and microfabrication to develop optical imaging systems that are inexpensive, portable and provide point-of-care diagnoses for diseases ranging from cancer to malaria. Her research has produced 29 patents, more than 230 research papers, 11 book chapters and the textbook Biomedical Engineering for Global Health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222; text-align: justify;\">Richards-Kortum is a fellow of\u00a0the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Optical Society of America, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Biomedical Engineering Society and the National Academy of Inventors. She also is an inaugural member of the National Advisory Council for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering for the National Institutes of Health. Among her previous honors are the 2013 Lemelson-MIT Award for Global Innovation, the 2014 Michael S. Feld Biophotonics Award from the Optical Society of America and the 2007 Chester F. Carlson Award from the American Society for Engineering Education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222; text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Recognition by one&#8217;s peers is the goal of every scientist,&#8221; said Vardi, who also serves as director of Rice&#8217;s Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology. &#8220;Getting elected to the National Academy of Sciences is the ultimate peer recognition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222; text-align: justify;\">Vardi joined Rice&#8217;s faculty in 1993. His research interests include applications of logic to computer science, database systems, computational complexity theory, multiagent systems and specification and verification of hardware and software. He is the author or co-author of more than 500 technical articles and of two books, &#8220;Reasoning about Knowledge&#8221;\u00a0and &#8220;Finite Model Theory and Its Applications.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222; text-align: justify;\">Vardi is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europaea. He is a fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery, the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Among his prior honors are the Southeastern Universities Research Association&#8217;s 2013 Distinguished Scientist Award, the 2011 IEEE Computer Society Harry H. Goode Award, the 2008 Blaise Pascal Medal for Computer Science by the European Academy of Sciences and the 2000 Goedel Prize for outstanding papers in the area of theoretical computer science.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222; text-align: justify;\">Dual-academy membership is an honor Vardi and Richards-Kortum share with only four other faculty members throughout Rice&#8217;s 103-year history: former provosts David Auston and William Gordon; Naomi Halas, the Stanley C. Moore Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and professor of chemistry, bioengineering,\u00a0physics and astronomy, and\u00a0materials science and nanoengineering; and\u00a0Antonios Mikos, the Louis Calder Professor of Bioengineering and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and a professor of materials science and nanoengineering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222; text-align: justify;\">Rice&#8217;s other members of the National Academy of Sciences are Robert Curl, Herbert Levine, K.C.
