The work is being done with an eye toward curbing overpopulation, and to improve quality of life in impoverished countries, they said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jeffrey Jensen, of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/xd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Oregon Health and Science University<\/span><\/a>, was awarded\u00a0<a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/How-We-Work\/Quick-Links\/Grants-Database\/Grants\/2014\/11\/OPP1118762?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a $5 million grant<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in October \u2013 and is reportedly seeking further funding to continue his work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Oregon Permanent Contraception Research Center is conducting research on primates using polidocanol foam, a treatment currently approved by the FDA for treating varicose veins, according to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/blogs\/researchnews\/2015\/03\/04\/how-dr-jeffrey-jensen-is-working-to-improve-womens-health-around-the-globe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">an announcement from the school<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMy goal is very simple: to make every pregnancy planned and highly desired,\u201d Jensen reportedly\u00a0<a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/blog\/health-care-inc\/2015\/05\/ohsu-researcher-nabs-5m-grant-to-develop-permanent.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">told the Portland Business Journal<\/span><\/a>\u00a0last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though the foam is currently the primary research for permanent contraception, the center is also seeking requests for proposals for other concepts that may work in places across the globe where there are not enough resources to do surgery easily, according to an OHSU release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An estimated 222 million women around the world would like to delay or stop having children entirely \u2013 but have no access to contraception, for a variety of economic and social reasons, according to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs351\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">World Health Organization statistics<\/span><\/a>. The organization also estimates about 100 million women will undergo sterilization over the next two decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some religious and pro-life groups have opposed the work, through\u00a0<a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/gates-foundation-donates-5-million-to-develop-permanent-contraception\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">blogs such as LifeSiteNews<\/span><\/a>. They have linked the research to \u201ceugenics\u201d movements of the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Gates Foundation was started with reproductive health as a major goal. However, founder Bill Gates has said that contraception \u2013 and improved survival rates for the children who are born \u2013 would lead to improved quality of life in developing countries, as\u00a0<a style=\"color: #bf3b41;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.looktothestars.org\/news\/4695-bill-gates-clarifies-the-issue-of-overpopulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">he told a TED Talks conference in 2010<\/span><\/a>. Through programs such as the organization\u2019s ongoing malaria-elimination initiative, Gates and his Foundation have said that human population growth can be slowed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIf we improve health rapidly we will get the peak population to be as much as a billion below the current expected peak.
