Over the next 10 days, the satellite\u2019s propulsion system will raise it into a geostationary orbit some 36 000 km above the equator, where its speed matches Earth\u2019s rotation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once these initial efforts are completed by ESA\u2019s European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, MSG-4 will be handed over to the satellite\u2019s owner, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites \u2013 Eumetsat \u2013 to commission the payload.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"s_1\" class=\"section\" style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #031e31; text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ESA\u2019s Director General, Johann-Dietrich Woerner, commented, \u201cAfter just two weeks as the new DG for ESA, it has been a pleasure not only to witness the launch of this satellite, but also observe the continued cooperation between ESA and Eumetsat.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5252\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5252\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/MSG-4_medium.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5252\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/MSG-4_medium-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"MSG-4 in orbit\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/MSG-4_medium-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/MSG-4_medium-70x40.jpg 70w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/MSG-4_medium.jpg 305w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MSG-4 in orbit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cTonight\u2019s launch allows the continuation of high-quality observations of weather from space, including rapid detection and warning of extreme weather situations \u2013 imperative for keeping European citizens safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After commissioning, MSG-4 will become Meteosat-11 and be \u2018stored\u2019 until it replaces one of its predecessors. It will then ensure the continuity of the data until the first Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellites enter service, expected in 2019 and 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"s_2\" class=\"section\" style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #031e31;\">\n<div class=\"img_obj l_img\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe have learnt a lot from the long-term storage of satellites, which we can use for other operational systems such as the Sentinels,\u201d noted Volker Liebig, Director of ESA\u2019s Earth Observation Programmes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe excellent health of the Meteosat satellites in orbit means the launch of MSG-4 comes five years later than expected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ESA\u2019s contribution to weather and climate watch is not limited to the Meteosat series of satellites \u2013 it has also developed the Meteorological Operational satellites MetOp, also operated by Eumetsat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Additionally, the ESA-developed Sentinel-4 and -5 missions dedicated to monitoring the composition of the atmosphere for Europe\u2019s Copernicus programme will be carried on the MTG and MetOp Second Generation satellites, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last weather satellite in Europe\u2019s highly successful Meteosat Second Generation series lifted off on an Ariane 5 launcher at\u00a021:42 GMT (23:42 CEST) on 15 July from Europe\u2019s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
