Dominating the southern (left) portion of the scene are numerous jumbled blocks \u2013 \u2018chaotic terrain\u2019, believed to form when the surface collapses in response to melting of subsurface ice and the subsequent sudden release of water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Towards the centre of the image is the smoother floor of Ganges Chasma, comprising mostly alluvial deposits, and which transitions into a steep scarp and a cratered plateau to the north (right).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6753\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6753\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Aurorae_Chaos_and_Ganges_Chasma_in_context_medium.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6753\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Aurorae_Chaos_and_Ganges_Chasma_in_context_medium.jpg\" alt=\"Aurorae Chaos and Ganges Chasma in context\" width=\"305\" height=\"270\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Aurorae_Chaos_and_Ganges_Chasma_in_context_medium.jpg 305w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Aurorae_Chaos_and_Ganges_Chasma_in_context_medium-300x265.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aurorae Chaos and Ganges Chasma in context<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The northern plateau shares the same elevation as that on the southern side, but does not exhibit similar levels of catastrophic collapse.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"s_2\" class=\"section\" style=\"font-weight: normal; color: rgb(3, 30, 49); text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"img_obj l_img\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">However, the cliff tops display small channels and the walls show evidence of slumped material or landslides \u2013 best seen in the perspective view. Material closest to the main chasma floor appears stepped, which could reflect different water or ice levels over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Another interesting feature can be seen towards the upper centre and to the left in the main images, where a pair of faults cuts through a collapsed block, and perhaps extends into the southern plateau at the top of the image.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"s_3\" class=\"section\" style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #031e31;\">\n<div class=\"img_obj r_img\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">The faults could be the result of a tectonic event that occurred after the formation of the chaotic terrain, or they could be from simple subsidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">This region is just a small subsection of a huge system of interconnected valleys and flood channels that emptied water into the northern plains, and which were most likely active in the first 1\u20132 billion years of Mars\u2019
