Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern worldwide.\u00a0\u00a0<a style=\"color: #b8292f;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/images\/dpk\/2015\/dpk-antibiotics-week\/img4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The CDC reported<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that 50 percent of all antibiotics prescribed in U.S. health provider offices are either unnecessary, or inappropriate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The \u2018smart\u2019 bandage works because of fluorescent dye-filled nanocapsules, which break open only when they come in contact with toxins produced by disease-causing bacteria in the wound, according to the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #b8292f;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.insight.mrc.ac.uk\/2015\/11\/16\/behind-the-picture-the-smart-dressing-aiming-to-tackle-antimicrobial-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Medical Research Council<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Within hours doctors can see if the glow-in-the-dark dye appears on a patient, without having to remove bandages and subject patients to more pain and distress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr. Toby Jones, who led the study, told\u00a0<em>Wired:\u00a0<\/em>\u201cThe nanocapsules mimic skin cells in that they only break open when toxic bacteria are present.\u00a0 They aren\u2019t affected by the harmless bacteria that normally live on healthy skin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Medical Research Council recently funded $1 million to researchers to test how accurate the dressing is at detecting infection in wound swabs and blister fluid from patients, as well as to develop a prototype for testing on patients.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new \u2018smart\u2019 wound
