Three days before they reach the Red Planet, Schiaparelli will separate from the orbiter, which will then enter orbit for a five-year mission of studying atmospheric gases potentially linked to present-day biological or geological activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Schiaparelli will enter the atmosphere at 21\u00a0000 km\/h and slow by aerobraking in the upper layers, then deploying a parachute, followed by liquid-propellant thrusters that will brake it to less than 5 km\/h about 2 m above the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[pullquote]Schiaparelli will enter the atmosphere at 21\u00a0000 km\/h and slow by aerobraking in the upper layers, then deploying a parachute, followed by the thrusters will be switched off and it will drop to the ground, where the impact will be cushioned by its crushable structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Less than eight minutes will have elapsed between hitting the atmosphere and touching down in a region known as Meridiani Planum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #d0103a;\" href=\"http:\/\/exploration.esa.int\/mars\/48898-edm-science-payload\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scientific sensors<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">on Schiaparelli will collect data on the atmosphere during entry and descent, and others will make<\/span>\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #d0103a;\" href=\"http:\/\/exploration.esa.int\/mars\/56552-an-interview-with-francesca-esposito-principal-investigator-of-dreams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local measurements<\/a>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000;\">at the landing site for a short period determined by its battery capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Schiaparelli will remain a target for laser ranging from orbiters using its<\/span>\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #d0103a;\" href=\"http:\/\/exploration.esa.int\/mars\/56726-schiaparelli-without-heat-shield-and-back-cover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reflector<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The module is named in honour of the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, who mapped the Red Planet\u2019s surface features in the 19th
