Kelly wrote, &#8220;Yes, there are other life forms in space! #SpaceFlower #YearInSpace&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[pullquote]<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The challenging process of growing the zinnias provided an exceptional opportunity for scientists back on Earth to better understand\u00a0how plants grow in microgravity<\/span>.[\/pullquote]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This flowering crop experiment\u00a0<a style=\"color: #428bca;\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/kennedy\/2015\/11\/16\/space-grown-flowers-will-be-new-year-blooms-on-international-space-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">began on Nov. 16, 2015<\/span><\/a>, when NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren activated the Veggie system and its rooting &#8220;pillows&#8221; containing zinnia seeds. The challenging process of growing the zinnias provided an exceptional opportunity for scientists back on Earth to better understand\u00a0<a style=\"color: #428bca;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/station\/research\/news\/flowers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">how plants grow in microgravity<\/span><\/a>, and for astronauts to practice doing what they\u2019ll be tasked with on a deep space mission: autonomous gardening. In late December, Kelly found that the plants\u00a0<a style=\"color: #428bca;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StationCDRKelly\/status\/681159850475257859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;weren&#8217;t looking too good,&#8221;<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and told the ground team, \u201cYou know, I think if we\u2019re going to Mars, and we were growing stuff, we would be responsible for deciding when the stuff needed water. Kind of like in my backyard, I look at it and say \u2018Oh, maybe I should water the grass today.\u2019 I think this is how this should be handled.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Veggie team on Earth created what was dubbed \u201cThe Zinnia Care Guide for the On-Orbit Gardener,\u201d and gave basic guidelines for care while putting judgment capabilities into the hands of the astronaut who had the plants right in front of him. Rather than pages and pages of detailed procedures that most science operations follow, the care guide was a one-page, streamlined resource to support Kelly as an autonomous gardener.
