That is just one of the findings of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/16752532\/Mobile_media_matters_Media_use_and_relationship_satisfaction_among_geographically_collocated_dating_couples.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">latest research<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commarts.wisc.edu\/people\/ctoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Catalina Toma<\/span><\/a>, assistant professor in the Department of Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin\u2014Madison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Results show that even couples who live close to one another rely heavily on mobile media to manage their dating relationships. And that can be a good thing, Toma says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a sense of maintaining an emotional connection and that your partner is psychologically close,\u201d Toma says. \u201cIt might seem trivial, but it\u2019s really relationship maintenance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While much research has been done studying the uses and effects of new communication technologies in long-distance relationships, Toma was curious about other couples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[pullquote]\u201cWe found the quantity didn\u2019t matter as much,\u201d Toma says. \u201cHigh quality communication was predictive of being satisfied in the relationship.\u201d[\/pullquote]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the study, more than 200 undergraduate students who live near their partner answered an online survey about how they use mobile communications to stay in touch.\u201cI wanted to know to what extent couples who live close to one another rely on technology to communicate and how it affects their relationship experience,\u201d Toma says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A main goal of the study was to examine whether the quality of media use was associated with an increase in relationship satisfaction by boosting partner idealization, a process whereby individuals perceive their romantic partners in unrealistically positive ways. Research shows that idealization contributes substantially to the satisfaction individuals derive from relationships, Toma says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIdealization is necessary in romantic relationships. If you don\u2019t think your partner is more special than everyone else, you won\u2019t be as satisfied.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7740\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7740\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Toma-200.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7740\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Toma-200.jpg\" alt=\"Catalina Toma\" width=\"200\" height=\"226\" title=\"\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7740\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Catalina Toma<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The survey included statements such as \u201cmy partner and I understand each other completely\u201d that participants were asked to grade on a scale. They were also asked to grade how much their partner meets their needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The survey shows that high quality communication through mobile media fostered partner idealization, which in turn increased relational satisfaction. Mobile media use contributes to relational satisfaction and can be a practical way to contribute to satisfaction in dating relationships, Toma says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The most frequent medium used was texting, followed by phone calls, Facebook, instant messaging, Twitter, email, video chatting and, least of all, video games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The survey showed that participants spent an average of more than two hours texting with their romantic partners on a daily basis. However, this high average was due to the presence of a few outliers; the median was 60 minutes per day. For phone calls, participants reported spending an average of a little under half an hour talking with their romantic partners each day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe found the quantity didn\u2019t matter as much,\u201d Toma says. \u201cHigh quality communication was predictive of being satisfied in the relationship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Both phone calls and texting were seen by partners as high quality communication methods, meaning their interactions were satisfying, rewarding and positive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All that texting might have some people rolling their eyes and wondering why those who live near one another need to be in constant communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere are people who view it as superfluous, but it\u2019s not. It signals, \u2018I\u2019m thinking about you,\u2019\u201d Toma says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The bottom line, Toma says, is that technology is here to stay.
