\"unnamed\"<\/a>A cross-European team of researchers have reported the results of\u00a0the\u00a0four-year,\u00a0\u20ac3.7m\u00a0SPOTLIGHT<\/a>\u00a0study\u00a0into measures to prevent adult obesity and the role of the environment.\u00a0They find that urban planners\u00a0have a responsibility to ensure that the neighbourhoods they design\u00a0will\u00a0promote healthy behaviour, and better still if the environment can\u00a0encourage social networking and community support.<\/span><\/p>\n

The researchers also\u00a0find\u00a0that local interventions to prevent obesity and encourage healthy behaviour need to be adapted to local needs, and the planning of interventions should involve the people being targeted.\u00a0This may require \u2018two-phase\u2019 funding, with an initial fund for participatory design and piloting of\u00a0a project, and a second phase to implement it if the initial phase shows promise.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHealth promotion in communities is important, and can be successful,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0SPOTLIGHT\u00a0project coordinator Dr Jeroen Lakerveld of\u00a0the VU University Medical Canter, Amsterdam. \u201cBut\u00a0short-term funding for community projects may lead to frustration and poor project morale. The agencies that supply funding\u00a0need to realise that sustained\u00a0support\u00a0is\u00a0needed to get sustained\u00a0results.\u00a0Promoting strong communities and re-designing the built environment can contribute significantly to sustainable changes in health behaviour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The SPOTLIGHT project undertook surveys of people\u2019s views on what constituted their local environment and investigated tools such as Google StreetView to assess the quality of neighbourhoods<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
