{"id":8022,"date":"2016-03-17T07:11:11","date_gmt":"2016-03-17T07:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/?p=8022"},"modified":"2016-03-17T07:11:11","modified_gmt":"2016-03-17T07:11:11","slug":"highly-specialized-high-school-athletes-more-likely-to-have-certain-injuries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/highly-specialized-high-school-athletes-more-likely-to-have-certain-injuries\/","title":{"rendered":"Highly specialized high school athletes more likely to have certain injuries"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_8023\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8023\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dave-bell-in-lab.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8023 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dave-bell-in-lab.jpg\" alt=\"UW-Madison assistant Professor David Bell with a student athletic participant at the Wisconsin Injury in Sport Laboratory. \" width=\"300\" height=\"416\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dave-bell-in-lab.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dave-bell-in-lab-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UW-Madison assistant Professor David Bell with a student athletic participant at the Wisconsin Injury in Sport Laboratory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is a sense among those who pay attention to youth and high school athletics that more and more young athletes today are focusing on excelling at a single sport instead of playing a variety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Perhaps surprisingly, though, little research has been conducted on the prevalence of sports specialization in high school athletes \u2014 and what that might mean for these competitors\u2019 health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSport specialization is a hot topic in sports medicine, yet there is a severe lack of empirical data that exists about the topic,\u201d says UW\u2013Madison\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #008cba;\" href=\"https:\/\/kinesiology.education.wisc.edu\/kinesiology\/people\/graduate-faculty\/david-bell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">David Bell<\/span><\/a>, an assistant professor with the Department of Kinesiology\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #008cba;\" href=\"https:\/\/kinesiology.education.wisc.edu\/at\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Athletic Training Program<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the director of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #008cba;\" href=\"http:\/\/kinesiology.education.wisc.edu\/kinesiology\/research\/laboratories\/wisconsin-injury-in-sport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wisconsin Injury in Sport Laboratory (WISL)<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u201cPhysicians are way ahead of the research in this area and, anecdotally, they report that they are seeing more kids in their clinics that have injuries that used to be only found in older athletes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In an effort to pull together some much-needed data on the topic, Bell and colleagues from across the UW\u2013Madison campus produced a groundbreaking study that was recently published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Titled\u00a0<a style=\"color: #008cba;\" href=\"http:\/\/ajs.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/2016\/02\/24\/0363546516629943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cPrevalence of Sport Specialization in High School Athletics,\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0this one-year observational study found that high school athletes from a smaller school were less likely to specialize in a sport than those attending a large school. The researchers also found that highly specialized athletes were more likely to report a history of overuse knee or hip injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bell, a faculty member with the School of Education, is the lead author on the report, which is co-authored by Department of Kinesiology Ph.D. students Eric Post and Stephanie Trigsted; Scott Hetzel, an associate researcher with the Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics; Timothy McGuine, a senior scientist and research coordinator with the UW Health Sports Medicine Center; and Alison Brooks, a medical doctor with the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To conduct their study, the researchers had 302 high school athletes at two schools complete two different surveys \u2014 one examining sport specialization and the other asking about injury history. The athletes were then classified into low, moderate or high specialization groups.If there is a key takeaway for young athletes and their parents, Bell says simply, \u201cMake sure your children are getting breaks in competition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[pullquote]The researchers also found that athletes in the high specialization group were more likely to report a history of overuse knee injuries compared with moderate or low specialization athletes.[\/pullquote]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Of those who completed the survey, 34.8 percent were classified as low specialization, 28.8 percent as moderate and 36.4 percent as high specialization. The surveys found that athletes from the small school were more likely to be classified in the low specialization group (low, 43 percent; moderate, 32 percent; high, 25 percent) compared with those from the large school (low, 26 percent; moderate, 26 percent; high, 48 percent).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The researchers also found that athletes in the high specialization group were more likely to report a history of overuse knee injuries compared with moderate or low specialization athletes. Similarly, athletes who trained in one sport for more than eight months out of the year were more likely to report a history of knee injuries, overuse knee injuries and hip injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cParticipating in a single sport for more than eight months per year appeared to be an important factor in the increased injury risk observed in highly specialized athletes,\u201d the authors conclude.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Moving forward, Bell says he would like to build off of these findings and get this important information into the hands of young athletes, parents and coaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cRecommendations already exist to try and limit athletes\u2019 year-round exposure to sports,\u201d says Bell. \u201cYet we don\u2019t know how well these recommendations are known to the average person. Our next step is to survey parents and athletes regarding their knowledge of sport participation recommendations, and also their attitudes toward sport specialization.
