{"id":8132,"date":"2016-03-24T11:33:30","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T11:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/?p=8132"},"modified":"2016-03-24T11:33:30","modified_gmt":"2016-03-24T11:33:30","slug":"benefits-of-moderate-drinking-overblown-says-new-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/benefits-of-moderate-drinking-overblown-says-new-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Benefits of Moderate Drinking Overblown, Says New Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/bt1603_seth_beer.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8133 \" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/bt1603_seth_beer-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"bt1603_seth_beer\" width=\"278\" height=\"278\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/bt1603_seth_beer-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/bt1603_seth_beer-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/bt1603_seth_beer.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><\/a>Everything in moderation \u2013 at least when it comes to alcohol \u2013 has been the takeaway from a litany of studies touting the health benefits of drinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But a new meta-analysis claims that the group of abstainers include past drinkers and unhealthy teetotalers that skew the purported benefits of having up to two drinks per day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once the goalposts were moved, the J-shaped curve for alcohol and all-cause mortality actually turned into a straight line: more drinks means less life,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #b8292f;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jsad.com\/doi\/10.15288\/jsad.2016.77.185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">says the study, in the latest issue of the\u00a0<em>Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs<\/em><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a general idea out there that alcohol is good for us, because that\u2019s what you hear reported all the time,\u201d said Tim Stockwell, the lead researcher, of the University of Victoria Centre for Addictions Research in British Columbia. \u201cBut there are many reasons to be skeptical.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The analysis looked at 87 previous studies found through keyword searches in PubMed. Combined, the peer-reviewed papers looked at roughly 4 million people, among whom more than 360,000 deaths were recorded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The claims of many studies that 20 grams of daily alcohol intake \u2013 two drinks per night \u2013 were beneficial to health were found to be baseless, once the former drinkers were cut out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[pullquote]The study comes on the heels of several health officials urging any amount of alcohol to be considered a health risk.[\/pullquote]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ostensibly, those previous drinkers had poor health outcomes that may have turned them into abstainers, according to the authors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Overall, the results indicated that drinking is bad for you, they claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe pattern of results is more consistent with a linear dose response than a J-shaped curve describing the risk relationships between level of alcohol consumption and all-cause mortality,\u201d the authors write.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, the latest study did not differentiate between the types of alcohol \u2013 an especially important factor, considering that many of the health claims focus on red wine\u2019s cardiovascular benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The study comes on the heels of several health officials urging any amount of alcohol to be considered a health risk. Doctors in the United Kingdom declared that any amount of alcohol is a cancer risk. Last summer, a Harvard team found that even\u00a0<a style=\"color: #b8292f;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.laboratoryequipment.com\/news\/2015\/08\/glass-wine-day-could-cause-women-cancer-someday-says-harvard-team?__hstc=145616811.8179000595d7a2d243c3beecdf3b7690.1451972500869.1458809792650.1458817635457.19&amp;__hssc=145616811.1.1458817635457&amp;__hsfp=250754436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a glass of wine can increase the cancer risk for women, particularly breast cancer<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The health benefits of alcohol have been\u00a0<a style=\"color: #b8292f;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.laboratoryequipment.com\/news\/2015\/08\/glass-wine-day-could-cause-women-cancer-someday-says-harvard-team?__hstc=145616811.8179000595d7a2d243c3beecdf3b7690.1451972500869.1458809792650.1458817635457.19&amp;__hssc=145616811.1.1458817635457&amp;__hsfp=250754436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">subject to debate by scientists for years<\/span><\/a>.
