The news comes ahead of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #f37043;\" href=\"http:\/\/tigers.panda.org\/political-momentum\/tiger-ministerial-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">a major tiger conservation meeting<\/span><\/a>\u00a0taking place tomorrow in New Delhi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(68, 68, 68); text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">This updated minimum figure, compiled from IUCN data and the latest national tiger surveys, indicates an increase on the 2010 estimate of \u2018as few as 3,200\u2019, and can be attributed to multiple factors including increases in tiger populations in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #f37043;\" href=\"http:\/\/tigers.panda.org\/tiger-census\/tiger-census-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">India<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #f37043;\" href=\"http:\/\/tigers.panda.org\/tiger-census\/russia-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Russia<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #f37043;\" href=\"http:\/\/wwfnepal.org\/?209484\/Nepal-records-remarkable-growth-in-tiger-numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Nepal<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #f37043;\" href=\"http:\/\/tigerday.panda.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Bhutan<\/span><\/a>, improved surveys and enhanced protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\u201cFor\u00a0the first time\u00a0after decades\u00a0of constant decline,\u00a0tiger\u00a0numbers are on the rise.\u00a0This offers us great hope and shows\u00a0that we can save species and their habitats\u00a0when governments, local communities and conservationists work together,\u201d said Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF International.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">The meeting of tiger range governments at the 3rd Asia Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation this week is the latest step in the Global Tiger Initiative process that began with the 2010 Tiger Summit in Russia. Governments at that meeting agreed to the Tx2 goal to<a style=\"color: #f37043;\" href=\"http:\/\/tigers.panda.org\/tx2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">double wild tiger numbers by the year 2022<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(68, 68, 68); text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\u201cThis is a critical meeting taking place at the halfway point in the Tx2 goal,\u201d said Dr Rajesh Gopal, Secretary General, Global Tiger Forum. \u201cTiger governments will decide the next steps towards achieving this goal and ensuring wild tigers have a place in Asia\u2019s future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(68, 68, 68); text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Over the three day meeting, countries will report on their progress toward the Tx2 goal and commit to next steps. Prime Minister Modi will address the conference on the essential role tigers play as a symbol of a country\u2019s ecological well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(68, 68, 68); text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\u201cA strong action plan for the next six years is vital,\u201d said Michael Baltzer, Leader of WWF Tx2 Tiger Initiative. \u201cThe global decline has been halted but there is still no safe place for tigers.
