\"IAEA\"<\/a>Japan has pledged an additional contribution of two million euros to support the renovation of the IAEA\u2019s nuclear applications laboratories in Seibersdorf, near Vienna.<\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida made the pledge during a meeting in Tokyo with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano on 25 April.<\/span><\/p>\n

The eight laboratories deliver technical assistance to IAEA Member States in the areas of food and agriculture, human health, the environment and the development of advanced scientific instruments. The laboratories train fellows and scientific visitors, conduct research and development and provide analytical services to Member State laboratories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Japan has already contributed around \u20ac2.3 million to the modernisation of the laboratories under a \u20ac31-million project known as\u00a0ReNuAL<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Director General Amano said the Japanese contribution, which follows\u00a0a recent two million dollar pledge by the United States<\/span><\/a>, would enable the Agency\u00a0to start construction of two planned new buildings<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at Seibersdorf \u2013 the new Insect Pest Control Laboratory, and the Flexible Modular Laboratory.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am very grateful for this important pledge by the government of Japan,\u201d Mr Amano said. \u201cIt comes at a very significant time and will allow us to start construction of both new buildings.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Minister Kishida expressed his government\u2019s strong support for the Director General’s work on the IAEA\u2019s\u00a0Atoms for Peace and Development<\/em>\u00a0mandate.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his meetings with Minister Kishida and other senior officials, Mr Amano discussed the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also briefed his Japanese counterparts on the Agency\u2019s work to monitor and verify Iran\u2019s implementation of its nuclear-related commitments under the\u00a0Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.<\/em>Recent troubling developments concerning the nuclear programme of the Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea were also discussed.<\/span><\/p>\n
