{"id":8619,"date":"2016-04-27T10:47:58","date_gmt":"2016-04-27T10:47:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/?p=8619"},"modified":"2016-04-27T10:47:58","modified_gmt":"2016-04-27T10:47:58","slug":"sentinel-1b-spreads-its-wings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/sentinel-1b-spreads-its-wings\/","title":{"rendered":"Sentinel-1B spreads its wings"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_8620\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8620\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sentinel-1_in_orbit_node_full_image_2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8620\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sentinel-1_in_orbit_node_full_image_2.jpg\" alt=\"Sentinel-1 in orbit\" width=\"700\" height=\"495\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sentinel-1_in_orbit_node_full_image_2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sentinel-1_in_orbit_node_full_image_2-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sentinel-1 in orbit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Following liftoff on 25 April from Europe\u2019s Spaceport in French Guiana, Sentinel-1B has opened its large solar wings and radar antenna.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sentinel-1B joined its identical twin, Sentinel-1A, in orbit to benefit numerous services such as monitoring Arctic sea ice and oil spills, mapping for forest, water and soil management, monitoring land for motion risks, and mapping to support humanitarian aid and crisis response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The pair covers the whole planet every six days for services that are providing a step change in the way our environment is managed.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8623\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8623\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sentinel-1B_lifts_off_small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8623\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sentinel-1B_lifts_off_small.jpg\" alt=\"Sentinel-1B lifts off\" width=\"170\" height=\"113\" title=\"\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8623\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sentinel-1B lifts off<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each satellite carries an advanced radar that images Earth\u2019s surface through cloud and rain, whether it is day or night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After its launch, Sentinel-1B has followed a carefully planned sequence over 10 hours to open its large radar antenna and solar wings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During ascent, the satellite\u2019s 12 m-long radar antenna and two 10 m-long solar wings were folded up to fit into the Soyuz rocket\u2019s protective fairing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They opened together in a specific sequence, which also allowed power from the solar panels to be available as soon as possible, so that the satellite no longer depends on batteries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ESA\u2019s Sentinel-1 project manager, Ram\u00f3n Torres, said, \u201cThe launch meant that we were able to forget the disappointment of the delays of the last few days in the blink of an eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe had a long night, staying awake to make sure the radar and solar panels deployed properly after the satellite had separated from the rocket.
