color: #f7961d;\" href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1603.03015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Combining Magnetic and Electric Sails for\u00a0Interstellar Deceleration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">.&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\u00a0Currently, one of\u00a0the most promising technologies for\u00a0decelerating a spacecraft on\u00a0an\u00a0<a style=\"color: #f7961d;\" href=\"http:\/\/sputniknews.com\/science\/20160417\/1038167559\/starshot-interstellar-space-launch.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">interstellar mission<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is the magnetic sail, which uses the deflection of\u00a0interstellar matter via\u00a0a magnetic field to\u00a0decelerate the spacecraft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">However, while the magnetic sail is very efficient at\u00a0high velocities, its performance decreases with\u00a0lower speeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/intersteller-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8681\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/intersteller-2.jpg\" alt=\"intersteller 2\" width=\"2874\" height=\"1990\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/intersteller-2.jpg 2874w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/intersteller-2-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/intersteller-2-1024x709.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2874px) 100vw, 2874px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">To solve this problem, scientists from\u00a0the Technical University of\u00a0Munich and the Initiative for\u00a0Interstellar Studies in\u00a0London have proposed combining the magnetic sail with\u00a0an electric sail, which is more effective at\u00a0lower velocities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">&#8220;Msails fail to\u00a0produce sufficient forces in\u00a0the low speed limit and Esails require very large masses in\u00a0order to\u00a0decelerate from\u00a0the high cruising speeds of\u00a0interstellar missions,&#8221;
